Last month, my sons Ethan and Frankie and I took a trip to Breezewood, Pennsylvania. We met up with my good buddy Jeff 'Tank' Hoover for an afternoon of eatin' and gunshop runnin', that started in Breezewood, and ended in Hancock, Maryland. The last shop we hit, was named Dugan's Sporting Goods. The small shop was packed with classic old rifles and shotguns, but we were huntin' sixguns!

The display case only held a handful of handguns, but one caught the eye of my 13 year old, Ethan. With a bit of prodding from 'Uncle Tank', I agreed to putting money down on the classic Colt sixgun...it is currently on layaway, and will be the subject of another post in a few weeks. The real story is what happened on the drive home.

Frankie is a really neat kid, and has a keen interest in all things sixgun. While we made the long drive home, Frankie's wheels were turning! He is especially thrifty with his money, and rarely spends any of his Birthday and Christmas money. We talked guns all the way home, and once there, he talked with his mother and I about being able to spend some of his own money on a gun for his upcoming 11th birthday. I of course, was fine with it, so he only had to convince his mom, and she didn't mind as long as I made sure he got something that was worth the money. We spent an hour on Gunbroker; I was trying to decide between something brand new or something classic, like what Ethan had just put on layaway.

All of a sudden, I remembered an ad from the Classifieds here; NIB Single Sixes in 32 mag! I found the thread and what do you know?? One left! The following Monday, a check went out to our member ACRYLICTNK, and in a short time, the little sixgun was waiting for Frankie and I at my local FFL! When the paperwork and background check were done, we were about to walk out when Jim said to us 'when you gonna shoot it?'. I mentioned how I had just bought some 32 brass (from forum member lark63!) and would be loading it up as soon as it arrived. Jim told us to wait a second, and he went to a corner of his shop and produced a box of Federal 32 mags! He handed them to Frankie and said 'There! Now go shoot it!'...what could I say?

We got to the range, and actually shot by the headlights of my truck. Frankie sat down and shot across his knees and clanged away on the steel plate! He LOVED it!

A few things happened over the past couple weeks, one prior to receiving the gun, and one after. First, Uncle Tank had jumped early and claimed one of the little Rugers for himself. After I told him that we got one for Frankie, Tank contacted the seller and we had a pleasant surprise when the sixgun arrived; Frankie's 32 is serial numbered consecutively with his Uncle Tank's! :D

Once Frankie had the gun in hand, he said he wanted some custom stocks on it like I have on my sixguns...enter Dick 'Sixshot' Thompson! I arrived home today to a package from 'Uncle Dick'...inside, a set of English Walnut stocks, and a note to Frankie! Michelle teared up when she read the note.

Frankie wants to travel to Idaho later this year, and hopes to shoot some ground squirrels and maybe chase a badger too! When he is a little older, he says he wants to hunt a Mountain Lion with Dick and I! I think he's hooked!

Ethan is well on his way to being a sixgunner. He shoots all of my sixguns well, from 22s up to the 45s. He knows Skeeter and Elmer, helps me reload, and is even apprenticing in my leather shop.

Frankie is now headed down that same path, and it sure is good to see!

I want to put out a special 'Thank You' to Tank, Sixshot, ACRYLICTNK, and lark63, for helping to make this a special birthday for Frankie!

Sorry for the poor quality of the cellphone pics...

I'll tell ya, Robb, Ethan is CONVINCED that he now owns that little sixgun! :? He even has me questioning the ownership!?! :D

I will be taking some pics this weekend...got a few other goodies to show off! :D :D

That is the one! I glad Ethan likes that old thing. I had a ball shooting that little thing when it was the brass bisley. Did you notice how similar the NF and the Forkin gun look?

The color case and horn grips do it! That Forkin gun is a fine piece of work!

Great story, Mike ! I 'm proud to say I got the chance to participate in that little adventure . Does me proud to "corrupt" such good kids ! If more kids were exposed to firearms, they'd learn the proper respect and care of handling such gems that tell them that we trust them, and think of them as resposible and trustworthy. It was a big step when we were growing up, to receive our first gun.

Those stocks sixshot sent are gorgeous ! Heck, that sixgun is already loaded with stories !

Way to go Mike. I really enjoy shooting mine just like it. I got some stocks from Uncle Dick also. If I buy your boy a huckleberry shake when he comes to Idaho, can I be Uncle Steve :?:   Steve

That's great! Awesome to see a young shooter getting started right.

I know I love my 32's, well all of 'em....

You can't put a price on a smile like that. Frankie I know you'll cherish that gun for the rest of your life! The ground squirrels will be popping up in a couple of weeks, Tick, Tick, Tick!!

Hey Dick ! Frankie is ready for something bigger like this !

He's waiting for Uncle Dick and Uncle Steve to take him after a montain lion .

I think this is his dream animal ! The boy has good sense ! Along with a great sense of adventure ! Oh to be 11 again ! :D

Hey Frankie, if you were THIS close to a lion, where would you shoot it? I don't think this lion has eaten any 11 year olds...............................yet!

Funny you ask that question! Frankie and I were just reading this thread before he went to bed, and I asked him that same question! We talked about the anatomy of the cat and where to hit it to best break it down. After he saw the picture of the lion, his smile was even bigger than the one where he is holding his sixgun. :D

Frankie, I shot this lion in 1977 or 78, we had jumped him off of a muley buck he had killed, the dogs ran him a short distance & he treed on top of a broken cedar tree, it was short enough they could almost reach him, he bailed out, had a short fight (blood in the snow) & took off up into the most rugged country he could find.
We were on snow shoes, my buddy was able to walk on top of the snow, me, being heavier kept breaking through & sinking in the deep snow. Twice more the dogs treed him but he was gone when we arrived, it took 11 hours to finish the job. When we first arrived both of us went up a tree on each side of him, he about went nuts, one of us had to go down & build a fire while the other stayed in the tree & took pictures.
It was very cold, maybe around zero, I was wearing a wool shirt & a down vest, I was sweating & the sweat would drip off my face & freeze on the front of my vest, my buddies beard was frozen solid. We took pictures for about an hour, checked the dogs feet, had a little snack & I went back up the tree about 40 feet & rested my 8 3/8's model 27 S&W (nickel) on a limb & told myself to bust him right behind the shoulder, the distance was about 5 feet. My load was 13.5 grs of 2400 & the Keith bullet in 38 special cases.
I had intended to shoot him & then give him a second shot double action but at the first shot he bailed out of the tree & hit the ground before I could even first a fast second shot. Everything seemed in slow motion, he made one huge leap & crumpled in mid air.
After I calmed down I realized how dumb I had been to get so close, they are lightning quick & he could have ripped my lips off before I could have even blinked! Maybe my most memorable hunt ever.
Here he is mounted about my desk at about the same distance I shot him.
