Has anyone ever put a 762x39 upper on their AR and can name a good one. First hand experience or otherwise. Doing research but very few reviews out there.

Hey hillbilly,it ain't just the upper, the lower won't accept AK mags and no one makes a 7.62x39 mag for standard lowers.
There is one company that makes a lower with interchangeable mag wells and they also make a 7.62x39 upper . CMMG makes a 7.62x39 at they call the mutant .
The big problem is the 7.62x39 cartridge is a tapered case so you need a magazine with a rather large curve in it to feed the round .
I'll look around and find out the name of the company that makes that lower with the interchangeable mag wells.
Its really the most cost effective way to go as their lower will take any at upper and for the 7.62x39 and 5.45x 39 all you need do is change the mag well and put the upper on the gun. It well also take uppers for 6.8 spc, 6.5 griendell, 5.56 , any upper that will fit a standard at lower..
When I find it I'll PMYou with the name and where you can get it.
Your Friend,
Lou
It looks like
Yankie Hill mkes a 7.62x39 upper and mags that will work in their standard lowers but the mags are expensive plus the cost of the upper .
If you are looking for a VERY accurate rifle in 7.63x39 check out the Arsenal SAM7- SF .it's a milled recivier AK imported from Bulgaria and it retails for 1.250.00 and that's what one of those ar's will cost you .
I owned one and it would hover right at 1" 3 shot 100 yard groups with Wolf ammo and the scope on it .
Here's their website. http://www.arsenalinc.com there are several models to choose from mine had a right side folding stock .
It's been said their the best ak's ever made ,give them a look. Look at the SAM7 series of rifles ,

I had a Colt A-2 upper but swapped it for an Olympic. Then I assembled one with a couple of unique features. Last year, I bought a Hardened Arms upper but haven't shot it yet. I'm more satisfied with the Oly than I was with the Colt.

" no one makes a 7.62x39 mag for standard lowers."
This statement is incorrect. C-Products/ASC(?) makes magazines that work well with 7.62x39.

"My experience is I wouldn't buy one again."
Why? Please elaborate so we may know what problem or experience prompted such a statement. I currently have 3 that fill a "niche" in my AR stable.

I have uppers in 5.45x39 , 9mm, 5.7x28, but rely on my Ruger mini 30 for my 7.62x39;
I would like to hear of the problems too from someone who has tried it; I haven't but my 5.45 works well.

I stated that
Yankee Hill has uppers and mags for the 7.62x39. had been a while since I'd seen that carbine with the interchangeable mag well .It would take standard uppers and you just swapped the mag well for the 7.62x39/ 5.45x39 mags. I just can't remember who made that rifle .
Personally if I wants a larger caliber AR I'd just go with the 6.8 spc , but thanks for the heads up .

I have an XCR with the two different barrel lengths (they interchange on the upper). I use both c-Products and ASC mags (30's) AR style mags. Never ran a 'franken-mag' but some claim they work. I know 20 rounders will work in the AR lower. The mags are hit and miss, there is lots of info on 'fixes' for the 30s (xcr forum). The shape of the case is different and does need the correct follower in the mag. Since the attraction was low cost plinking ammo, current prices and availability would preclude purchasing one today. As stated above, there are other options available. And lastly, reloading components are not easy to find since you may need .310 dia. bullets and boxer brass. 8)

Yeah, the last time I reloaded for the 7.62x39 there was only one bullet maker making a .311 bullet, I can't remember who it was but those reloads made my Arsenal SAM 7-FS a real tackdriver for an AK , consistent 1" 3 shot 100 yard groups .Like I said even with Wolf ammo that rifle would hover between 1- 1 1/2 with the scope on it off my Steady Rest .

Thanks for all the info. My lowers are Anderson so I will drop them a call. Never thought about the mag well issue. Sometimes its best to ask others. Thanks to all.

Please READ my post. ASC/C-Products makes AR magazines for the 7.62x39. They work well and come in 10(?) and 28/30 rounds. These mags fit fine in Anderson lowers.

I bought a 7.62x39 upper, don't remember the brand and got a 30 and a 10 round mag with it. Mounted it on a double star lower and can say no problems. The 7.62x39 is not as accurate as most rounds from standard rifles. It will produce game taking groups at 100+ yards. I bought mine to use the excess ammo I have. Lots of fun blasting old stock cheep ammo. However the AR platform, to me, is not a good choice for hunting game. A lighter bolt action is better.
I have taken 20-30 white tails with that cartridge using other rifles, mostly a SKS.
