6-7/8 slabside 22/45

Hi everyone, I just found out about this site. Hoping for some insight and history to my extremely accurate slabside I have had for about 7 years. Performs awesome and has never given me a problem. I have wanted to pick up another one but I have not come across one, and I don't even see it listed on Rugers website.

Can anyone provide information on it?

When they were made?

When did they stop making this 6-7/8" model?

Why no more slabsides? It may take more machining but it not like it would add $100 to the price because of additional manufacturing.

Is it rare?

The optic was also purchased 7 years ago. It is made by JPoint industries and has been just like the slabside in that performance has been stellar (the right corner has chalky dust, it is not scratched). There is no "off" switch but when you put on the black dust cover the laser goes to min brightness. The single CR2032 battery last me over three years before I have to replace it.

Very nice! I like the JPoint also, I have one on a 5.5" slabside MKIII Competition.

I'm not sure on production, you can get a rough estimate on production from Ruger's website or you can call Records and they will tell you when it shipped.

That model, P678GC isn't common but isn't real rare. The stainless version (KP678GC) is hens teeth. 250 total made as far as I can tell.

I will get the ser# tomorrow and call up Ruger to see what they can tell me. I purchased it at a tiny feed and tackle store in Ackerman, Mississippi so no telling how long it was there before I was fortunate to find it.

I spent years looking for a KP678GC, when a buddy of mine decided to get into shooting and picked up a scratched up 22/45 from a LGS in his small rural town. And guess what, it was the one I had been hunting for. Of course it is mine now, he has a cherry P678GC, but I'd very much like to find a nicer or NIB one.

I just called the Ruger records dept and had to leave a voice message. They called back in 20 min, this is what I was told.

Mine was made in Nov 2001

It was a distributor special made off and on during the period of July 96 and Oct 2007.

No idea when or if they will produce the P678GC again.

Davidson's is the distributor that had the exclusive on that one, and they sold petty well while it was made.
Here's what I have on that one from the "Reference of Ruger Firearms":

P678GC (Ruger model 0196). Special Distributor model. Known s/n range 220-81088 to 226-16920. Many thousands made for Davidson's from 1996 through 2004, which includes 525 pistols with 220- prefix, 424 pistols with 218- prefix (s/n example 218-78570) and the balance with 222- and higher prefix s/n.
