41 magnum-new model or old?

Going to buy my first 41 mag Blackhawk. All my other Blackhawks are new models. I have never owned an old model, :roll: so.........what would you all do? stick with the familiar or try an old model? I understand the issues with carrying 5 safely in the old model. Is the extra $ for the OM worth it? Will be used mostlyfor plinkin and workin up loads for the 41. Thanks.

We're just the opposite; I have NO new models. Nothing against them ~ just always seemed to find pretty good deals on the old unconverted shooters.

Heck ~ live a little and have at least one old model. Load 6 if you're just at the range and not gonna carry it. There's just a cool factor with the four clicks.

Speaking of Old Model 41 magnums, anyone got a duplicate serial numbered 41 magnum? Don't think I have ever seen one. Just wondering. Not really trying to hijack the thread.

I prefer the old model action also. However, the new model action is almost unbreakable. Just go with the deal when you find it.

Old or new, doesn't matter.
.357's are cheaper than most .41's.
I snagged a NM 357 anny and had it bored out to .41.
(I'll have 1K+ in it when I'm finally happy with it, but it will be perfection)
cheaper than a FA 97 (which is ALSO a FANTASTIC .41 platform)

My first handgun ever was a 6 1/2" New Model .41 mag. bought in '78.

Owned several other NM's over the following years, until I got a great deal on an OM .357.

After that I wanted nothing but Old Models!

Get an Old Model, if you don't like it, (not gonna happen) you could always resell it.

You definatley need to get an Old Model. The .41 magnum Old Models have counterbored cylinders and the 4 click (or 5 click) action, half cock notch, history and character may have you leaving your New Models home.

According to the letter I have from Ruger on my duplicate 41mag SN 10463 I have the second one of that number shipped. So I have the duplicate. Now if only I could find the original go go with it.

I agree with most here..get the OM blackhawk and never look back. Also if you get it and have to send it to Ruger for any reason, they will convert it without asking, so if that happens be sure to get the old parts back with the gun. Good luck!! 41 mag is a super round, especially for reloading!!

I have long been a fan of the .41 magnum. Two years or so ago I decided to add a Blackhawk to my collection and went on a search. I wanted face to face so confined my search to the immediate area.

After a couple of months two .41 Blackhawks turned up, a new and an old model. Now I have two .41 Blackhawks.

The new model is the most accurate revolver I have ever owned. I have a target over my computer with a five shot 1.5" group at twenty yards. H 110 and a 215 SWC.

But the OM with that wonderful action is my most favorite to shoot revolver.

I am a black sheep I guess. I have owned quite a few old models in the past. Now everything I have is new models and I don't miss all the clicks at all and can load the cylinder fully and be safe. The 41 mag is a fine caliber and a great shooter in my nm blackhawk. I personally wouldn't pay the higher price for a old model compared to the new one's. Both are great handguns. To me the clicks are annoying.

Thanks for all the input! Seems like the vote is for an old model :D That was kinda the way I was leaning when I asked. This is a GREAT place for info. Thanks there FiveBean, I dont need much encouragement to buy more guns :roll:

Another vote for the Old Model. I have Old Models in .357, .44 and .45 and have been looking for a .41 for some time. I have probably twice the number of New Models as Old Models, but there is just something about the Old Models (not to mention most of my OM are more accurate than my NM).
