daylight savings time q:

Here's the problem... if we adjust to one, day light savings time / 4 hours behind GMT is that not going to cause the same issue with darkness during the other 6 months.... One way or another WE will have to adjust....
My vote, for what it's worth is to just stick with Eastern Standard Time / 5 hours behind GMT year round like it was for a couple hundred years ... of course it was them dern British who figured the whole thing out.

I don't understand all the arguing over DST. From my perspective when I was working a 7AM-3:30PM job, summertime DST was good as it gave me an additional hour of daylight after work. BUT in the winter DST would have meant a 45 mile drive through areas with high deer populations at peak deer movement time (before/at first light)--not so good.
Everyone has a different outlook. Unless a person has some sort of 'disorder', simply changing 'get up/go to bed' time really shouldn't be a mind bending sort of thing.

EXACTLY! GMT has worked great for hundreds of years.

At my stage of life, a clock has very little meaning. I get up when I want, go to bed when I want, and mark days off the calendar so I don't forget what day of the week it is.

46 days into retirement and I am just starting to realize that.....I still wake up automatically at 0400 even if I stayed up late or decided on "one more pour". But know I can just doze off again....looks like 0600 is becoming my norm. Wife is in the rain locker at that time...so I get coffee going, navigate my way to the downstairs head. By the time I get back up top coffee is ready. Grab my mug, then the Wife's "Plan of The Day" from the kitchen counter, then to my chair to study the list and attempt to wedge it into my list. Amazingly, I've been able to complete a rifle build, and another will be complete tomorrow. Even got to the range a few times. Wife isn't too bad of a boss I guess....I'll know when I get my first performance review. Hopefully she allows me to provide a self assessment prior to the review....if so I'm sure she will provide a due date on the morning list.

Standard time would work better but whatever — just freeze it somewhere.

What baffles me is people have all these concerns over kids going to school in the dark.

Schools (and everyone else) are free to set show times at whatever they want. Just adjust the schedule to meet the objectives given the time of year. This would also fit cases where a school or other entity is at the extreme end of one time zone or another or at different latitudes.

give it time. the bells and IMC and 5MC screaming will go away in your head, in a few years too.
30 YEARS LATER and i still wake up thinking i heard mail call............or was it just sweepers?

It's funny you say that. When my Son was in his last command he lived in the barracks and called home often. Several times we'd be talking and he's suddenly stop and you'd here start running.....then say "almost got stuck in colors" and I'd hear it in the background. At night we'd hear taps playing when talking to him. He's at a new command and deployed, currently staged on Guam. Evening before last he called as Wife and I were settling into dinner. He was just heading out to chow and reveille was blaring through the speakers. Brings back memories.

Just recently I was invited to be a part of a documentary about CJ "Heater" Heatley, CAPT USN (RET). Lot's of jargon and stories that brought memories of 1MC announcements and 5MC blasts by the Air Boss....including one embarrassing event I was asked to talk about. Hopefully that is cut out lol.

Those reminders are enough and sometimes fun to remember. But I still swear I hear my work phone going off at night.....which was never a good thing or fun.

I live in a heavily wooded/mountainous (for east coast) community. The roads are narrow and very dark. Lots of critters out and about, especially deer with a sprinkle of coyote and bear. The kids all walk to the end of their roads to wait on the bus that makes it's way around. No kid has ever been hit. Mothers are more concerned about their kids being chomped on by a bear or coyote......which has never happened either.

People are saying you can simply adjust your hours to align with the daylight. Isn't that the same as switching between Standard Time and DST?

India is 30 minutes different from the rest of the world. In fact from East to West in India, they only have one time zone. India Standard Time.

They should have two to three time zones. So somehow they manage. Some people wake up in the sat and go to sleep when it’s still light outside.

If you're going to adjust your hours to align with the daylight, my solution would be awesome! Everywhere in the world, year round, sunset IS 8:00pm. Everyone has to adjust their local time  daily to accommodate my dream.

People would stop whining about today's method pretty quickly.

Interesting you should say that. When I was working for the Air Force in wether and later for the NWS, literally everything was donein ZULU or Zebra time. Old timers should recognize those names. Just another way to say Greenwich or Universal Coordinated Time. The problem to switching to UTC is noon in England might be four UTC in the AM in Tucson Az.
Ghere is a need for UTC but not in our daily lives. Airlines go by UTC but show local times on your ticket or itinerary. I believer railroads do the same thing. Probably cruise ships and cargo and oil tankers as well. It simplifies their scheduling. It would confuse the hell out of our lives.

On daylight avings time,I frankly have aalways had a srong dislike for the idea. Even as a kid when they reinstated it during WW2 it made absolutely no sense to me and still doesn't. In my teen years I hated it even more. You took your date to the drive in movie and she has an 11PM curfew. In the summer that movie might not start until 8:30 in some areas, Tucson being one but even in the San Francisco Bay Area it night be 8PM. You might not be lucky enough to see even all the first movie if it was a particularly long one.

These days it doesn't bother me a whole lot although my preference would be to stick with standard time and drop Daylight Saving Time back into the annals of history that covered bad ideas.

Move the clocks 30 minutes and leave it there. That way no one can Rosie O'Donnell about the time change.

Energy drink companys and pharma gotta be loving the permanent DST thing.
They're making bank off what an extra hour of sleep a night would fix already.

As long as it wasn’t liberty and no boats you’ll be okay.
