Rapid fire w/LC Carbine .45acp

I've gotten enough bullets down range since I bought this gun last year, that I felt comfortable with some rapid fire strings. I mean really rapid fire - as fast as I could pull the trigger, which is about 2-3 rounds/sec. Had 3 extended mags lined up with 25rnds each, and let 'er rip. Very entertaining, and not a whimper from the gun. I suspect it's quite capable of bump firing without any problems, although I probably won't. If somebody puts out a FRT or binary for it I might go for that tho. 😁

Hey @GunnyGene are you seeing scorching or powder on your cases? Took mine to the range on Saturday and all of the ejected cases were blackened by powder. My gunsmith (who I was shooting with) thinks we should change some springs to slow down the ejection a bit.

Occasionally, with cheap 230gr range ammo, but I don't care since I don't reload. I'd be careful about messing with springs tho. I haven't seen any of that with +P ammo.

I’ve seen scorching on some 230gr UMC with my S&W 625. What kind of ammo were you using?

I honestly do not remember what brand of ammo I was using, but it was cheap range ammo.

I'll give some higher end ammo a try. I have not messed with any +P yet.

I think the scorching is a result of the low pressure of typical range ammo, which probably drops below the threshold of pressure too early to keep the bolt fully in battery before the bullet exits the muzzle, resulting in some minor gas escape around the case. To me it makes sense due to the fact that standard .45acp powder loads are designed for a 5" barrel, not the much larger volume of a 16" barrel. All of this happens in a nano second so there may be other factors involved also, such as minor differences in chamber and/or case dimensions. Your smith might be right that a slightly heavier recoil spring would help with the range ammo, but I'd be concerned about the effect that would have using +P.

If I was a reloader, I'd be exploring a slower burn rate powder for the rifle to keep the pressure up.

Mine after initial scope zeroing gets nothing but Fed 230gr HST +P which by the way have not shown scorching or powder residue on the nickel cases.

That's some expensive ammo. Got any idea what MV you're getting out of the carbine?

A few months ago this guy tested a variety of +P ammo in the LC, but not the HST you use. Interesting point he made about the MV being too high in couple brands JHP and coming apart in gel tests resulting in poor penetration. Always some kind of compromise in shooting :cautious:.

I don’t have a chronograph ☹️ I need to get one. Supposed to be 950 out of a 5”bbl so I would suspect maybe 1,100 or so. Actually paid $28.95 for a box of 50 from a shop in SA, bought 6 boxes. I just haven’t done much steel or target shooting with it yet, if so it would get the UMC 230.
In about a month or so I will report on its effectiveness on feral hogs.

Great, looking forward to your range reports. Another good round is the 255grn +P hard cast flat nose from Underwood. It will get thru that heavy bone on hogs.

It looks more like just soot. I threw a couple in my pocket so I could get pictures and by the time I got home they were clean and shiny.

Just curious if you've had a chance to try out any +P, etc. yet and if so, did you still have scorching on the cases?

I have not yet. Between weekend travels and getting ready for Spring I have only had time to go to the range once in the last 6 weeks. That range trip was to dial in my new AR-9, with its G-17 companion, I would say they are, in fact, dialed.
