Is it just ordinary bluing over plain steel, or is the steel treated before the bluing is applied? And how tough is that bluing?

I just bought a brand new Mark III with "fancy grips" for $360. It's the same "blued" pistol that you guys paid $315 to $339 for, so far as I can tell...just nicer grips.
