I'm new to the forum and glad that i joined found a lot of helpful information. i have had my sr1911 sense the first of the year it's had about 5000 rounds put down range it gets carried daily as a duty weapon. when on duty i use 8 round mags never had any issues. i just received the 10 round mag from ruger and will be going to the range in the next day or two. thanks for the great info

Folks,

Another problem I have had with the 8 round magazine is as follows; if you slam a full magazine in a gun with the slide locked back (like you ran the gun dry - Ya I know your not supposed to to that) the top round will pop out and fly out of the gun. I saw it happen to some Cowboy Wild Bunch shooters also.

FYI

The old joke in the Colt world is an 8 round mag works 100% as long as you only put 7 rounds in it. I think with 8 round mags you are pushing the limit, so clean them when new and during use and expect them to fail earlier. I have old junk mags I have had for 40 years or more I still use at the range but I only put 6 rounds in them.

8rd Ruger mag has a lengthened body for the 8th round.

That means that it's Check Mate's extended length magazine with the patented Bull Nose ™ follower...which is essentially the Devel follower with a skirt. Much better than its parent, but still gives a little trouble sometimes...because it's still a compromise.

Let's look at it from the perspective of what and for whom the 1911 pistol was designed.

First, let's look at what it wasn't designed for.

It wasn't designed for SWAT/SET and it wasn't designed for high-speed/low-drag types to carry cocked and locked because fast-draw/gunfight.

It wasn't designed for playing "Let's pretend that we're in a gunfight" on Sunday afternoons.

The gun was headed for war sooner or later, and it was designed primarily with the horse mounted trooper in mind and clearing a stoppage while holding onto a nervous horse wasn't acceptable. It had to work. Period.

The man who was arguably the preeminent firearms design genius of the last 2 centuries and a team of Colt's top engineers set forth a set of specifications for that pistol in order to insure that it would work...and the magazine wasn't simply an afterthought or an accessory. It was a removable part of the system. It had to work, because if the magazine failed, the whole system failed.

Since the pistol was to be the primary weapon for a cavalryman while he was mounted...and because one more round in capacity could easily mean the difference between living and dying...one extra round would be important if it could be accomplished without compromising the reliability of the first 7 rounds.

Given that...

Does anybody really believe that the magazine's ability to accept 8 rounds somehow escaped John Browning's notice?

Does it stand to reason that it's at least possible Browning and his Dream Team tried 8 rounds and...finding that the overall reliability suffered...gave up and stuck with 7 rounds?

The problem with the 1911 is that so many people have been trying for so long to prove that they're smarter than John Browning, many of them really believe that they have.
I never thought about like that. But it does make good sense.

to make my Wilson Combat eight rounders work consistently I replaced the springs with Wolff extra power springs. before that only the seven round mags worked reliably. mine is the CMD version 1911.

Interesting. I have seven Wilson 47Ds, which are eight round magazines. Collectively, they have almost 12K rounds through them in my SR1911, almost all at weekly USPSA matches. I've never had a magazine malfunction of any kind in any of them. They're all working with their original Wilson springs.

How about: The 8th just wouldn't fit and stay within the flush-fit size specs of the Calvery? A properly designed extended mag, you know the brands, are just as reliable as 7 rounders. I've got a mix of Ruger/Checkmates and wilsons that have been 100% reliable in competition and 98% overall with 20000+ rounds. My only 7 rnd. is in my pocket to load +1's.

Exactly ... There is nothing magic about 7. As I have stated correctly designed 8rd mags have a lengthened body.

My eight and ten round mags (that came with the guns) all got put away. I just can't stand the look of them. The eights are ugly, ten rounders are even worse. If seven rounds isn't enough, well I'll take my chances. Ed

I have several Ruger 8 round mags. All work/function as they should in my SR1911, my Colt Series 70's, Wiley Clapp, & ANVIII's. Only problem I've encountered is running out of ammo at the range.

Sometimes there is a "Lemon" but I wouldn't discard all of them for a one off failure.
