This is a production overrun from a special batch of .38 Spl 4" Speed Six revolvers produced with a lanyard ring for a government contract. The post for the lanyard ring forced them to move the serial number prefix and suffix further apart than normal and eliminate the hyphen. The guns delivered to the government were marked "U.S." and had the catalog number "SS84L" rollmarked in place of "SPEED-SIX". The extras were eventually marked normally and shipped out through normal distribution channels (or possibly to the RCA). There is some blue loss on the left side of the gun and one side of the cylinder, but for display purposes, the right side looks good and the better part of the cylinder can be rotated to that side (as shown in the pics). Or just use it as a unique shooter. I reckon a minty example would be around $1K but the condition holds this one back. No box or papers.
