I, also, have old eyes so I did the same thing. Bushnell red dot, work great if you remember to turn it off! I used it for the first time yesterday at and outdoor range at 10 yards. I did take off the original grips and install Ruger's target grips. I did remove my right side safety.

Here it is with the Target Grips

Excellant shooting and good looking pistol.
I too removed the right hand safety.
One of these days I'll investigate a "pistol scope" and or Red dot setup.

I like the red dot, it really made it much easier to see the bullseye. Like I said, just don't forget to turn it off or you will be wandering through Walmart looking for batteries!

Sarona Gunworks will install the colored inserts on your existing front sight for you. It will work great along with a white outline rear sight blade available from Ruger or by filling in the embossed area around the notch with white paint if your blade has it. A Hi Viz fiber optic front sight works well with the same outlined rear blade. I fine the 3 dot optic sight to confusing to my old eyes.

D A Wood , does that just bolt right on a Mark IV ? Where do you get them ? Thanks .

Sorry I missed this post previously. I've been installing these inserts since LEO's were using Smith & Wesson revolvers as duty guns, so it's been quite a while. I shortened the barrel on my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 magnum to 4 5/8 back in the early 80's so I could get it out of my holster quick for a "HOG" hunt in eastern Tennessee. When I reset the front sight, I also did the insert on that sight and it held up very well using 240 grain Speer solid nose bullets with full-house loads.

I've tried various paint on the front sight, but it didn't last for me, taking the revolver in and out of the holster, it wore off in short order.

I bought the HiViz sight kit on shopruger.com. Fits great, measures the same height as the stock sight(OK it measured .005" shorter), and it comes with a green or red fiber optic light rod and a solid whit one. I've gotten so used to the fiber optic front sights on my GP100 and my SP101 that this was a must for my Mark IV.

I bought a little can of rust-oleum white paint and a small brush, and did all my handguns. It's been holding up pretty good.
