I'm considering the purchase of one of the 7.5" blued Bisleys in .44 Special that are referred to as the "Shootist mistake guns" (even though, as pointed out in earlier threads, it was Ruger's mistake, not the Shootist's).

Can anyone tell me the serial number range of these? I just want to make sure the one I'm looking is legit. I haven't been able to find any pictures of these guns where the serial number is visible, and they are not mentioned in any of my references. (I know, time to subscribe to RENE.)

Thank you for any help,
Flyrod

Thought I had the sn info in my computer version of the reference, but hadn't updated that yet.
Will need to go through an old RENE to find it.
Remember also that after the first batch of "mistake" guns were made, Ruger shipped another batch of 30 for some reason (all consecutive)...have no idea how/why those were built.

Thank you, Chet. I look forward to any info you can provide. I had not heard of the later batch of 30. If you have those numbers as well, I'd like to have them. The one I am looking at is 520-21XXX.

Terry, I had not seen that old post. It didn't come up in my searches. Man, I love the information to be found on this forum, and from its members.

The one I'm looking at fits right in that list, but is one of the "missing" numbers, at least as of the date of that old post (2010). It is 520-21552. It has the box and papers, but looks like it has been shot; I haven't seen it in person yet. I'll follow up after I see it, whether I purchase or not.

Thanks,
Flyrod

The group known as the "Shootists" had Ruger produce a special 7-1/2" .44 Special Bisley flattop for their 25th Anniversary. When they were done the guns were sent to the distributor who noticed the serial numbers were in Rugers regular flattop Blackhawk serial number range (520-) instead of with the SH25- prefix they were supposed to have. So the guns were sent back to Ruger, and the mistake guns were eventually sent back to the distributor for sale.
