I've had the new ar 556 on order at my local gun shop.Went in yesterday and my guy says that they stopped production due to an issue with the gun. Is there any truth to this?Anyone here anything,or why?

Same here.

Stories at some "local gun stores" rank right up there with internet ninja's

I sure hope its just an unfounded rumor, there are way too many of those
around lately. I did also read that they ceased production on the redesigned
Red Label and I hope that one is vaporware as well. I've been waiting on one
for over 2 months now since they first were announced and the dealer I'm
using is in very good credit standing with his distributor. :( I have now
sent Ruger an email inquiry on this issue and the Red Label similar rumor
and will call them tomorrow morning to follow up and report back tomorrow
night if I get a timely answer, stay tuned folks.

A call to ruger maybe ?

Now this is the most sensible idea yet, but it will likely have to be
on Monday since I don't expect they're operating in the office at
least until then. I'll call and report back by Monday evening.

Update: I have had a boilerplate reply from Ruger Customer Support
to my inquiry but no true reply yet other than that they will reply
within the next 3 days so I suppose we'll see what's what soon.

UPDATE #2 12/16/2015

Due to MY lack of half a brain at times, when I called Ruger today I neglected
to notice that the number for the products from Mayodan and New Hampshire
was EST not another time zone so I missed them, sorry folks, I'll call again
tomorrow at the middle of the day instead. :(

UPDATE #3 12/17/2015 I finally got a response from the Ruger Customer Support
email that merely told me to call Mayodan directly, not really worth waiting for 3
days to find anything out but at least they gave me the NC plant's phone number
that the website didn't list. So when I called them, after navigating the "press 1
for......yada yada yada, menu I got to speak to a live breathing human and this
is what she said, "I don't know anything about a manufacturing suspension
but I do know they are being manufactured daily and shipped regularly.
While this isn't precisely a confirmation or denial of the rumor, its something.
I suspect that the real issue underlying the spotty ability of distributors and
dealers to acquire them for sale is basically supply and demand at work with
a well known manufacturer offering a new model for sale at a price point
many find highly attractive and hence high supply and rigorous demand.

I bought an AR-556 in October at an Oktoberfest sale a LGS put on for $599. Have not had any problems with it so far.

45flattop, did you get to talk to a human? I was going to call today but figured I would wait for your update. I have one on preorder that I really hope to have by Christmas. :D

Miata Mike, I haven't yet spoken to a living person, the response I got was a
boilerplate email that did promise to reply fully within 3 days and that isn't
expired yet but should tomorrow. I'm calling them shortly this afternoon
in any event. I hope you get yours soon, I'd sure like for the one I put
on order out of a shipment to a LGS gets here before Christmas too, that
would make my whole year. :D

Any word yet 45flattop? :D

Yes, when I finally got the number to call, it wasn't one of the listed
ones on the website but was for the specific plant manufacturing the
AR556 in Mayodan NC, and then navigated the "blah blah blah yada
yada" menu to reach a real person, I explained my inquiry to this
woman who denied knowing a single thing about the "rumor" but
did say this in as many words, "we're manufacturing them daily and
shipping them out daily" but that tells me nothing really since
something could be happening she didn't know anything about
for fear the reality if it got out to consumers would be depressing
to sales, so I guess I'll just have to bide my time and hope for
something definitive soon. If you hear anything I know I'd be
delighted to hear. I find one thing peculiar, I realize that the
gun was only announced publicly at the end of September and
that there are such things as deadlines as cutoff dates for the
printers but I subscribe to a myriad selection of gun magazines
and so far, including the current American Rifleman that arrived
just yesterday, NOT A ONE periodical has featured or reviewed
it as of today, GUNS, SHOOTING TIMES, Guns & Ammo, or
GUN'S sister publication, American Handgunner(I realize this
is outside of their usual purview but I'd think something this
fast selling sure to be in high demand would merit a mention
at least, there). The only one I haven't checked yet since
I don't subscribe to it is Rifle and its clone Handloader.

Arnt you people ashamed, your being lied to and allow it to continue.
The red label has been a nightmare to ruger twenty years or more.
Ruger, since the bosses death, is not ruger. Sure, they are cashing in on the name and fame, where did you ever hear of a ruger rifle failing after its been shot a few hundred times. A advertisement, after a ruger advertisement of one of their rifles, "this company has been authorized by ruger to fix that brand new rifle you just bought to make it work properly,"for more money than you paid for that rifle. Where do hear of anything like that. Metal fatigue on a one or 2 year old rifle? My company.

Hi,

Used to hear a variant in our shop all the time: "Rugers are kit guns. Buy one, bring it to us, and we'll finish it for you!" That "job" wasn't cheap, but nobody I know of ever had to take one back after our guys got done, either. I always thought there was a lesson in there for Ruger, and William B. his very own self was still in charge then.

My theory is the gun store is loaded with other brands as is most of the industry and was trying to convert you to something in stock. My local gun boutique stated that everyone is loaded with ar styles and manufacturers are desperate to move them. IMHO Bob

And my experience also is the local gun stores have no clue whatsoever about any recent releases of Rugers, or any manufacturer at all.

And they are so far behind in their knowledge of recent releases that when they finally do realize a model has been offered, and they've never seen one, they just assume it was a limited run and/or otherwise is no longer in production.

I recently bought two of the SR1911 Night Watchman models online, and had them delivered to my local gun store. They were just amazed at these and had no idea they were even an item.

These local gun stores struggle to keep in business. But they make no attempt to educate themselves of what is available, and what their public just might purchase. They miss out on a lot of sales.

So yes, to cover up their lack of interest in following the market, it is easier for them to say an item is out of production, and try to switch the buyer to another product that he just happens to have a dozen of in his shop.

It is frustrating that I cannot go to any gun store and find the latest edition of any gun that might interest me.

WAYNO.

I am very fortunate to have access to one of the last of the real gun stores, still family owned, everyone there reloads, knows the guns and has been in operation here in Ogden for 65 years. They take special orders, run special events, bring in special editions and one of them can answer nearly any question. Kents Sports Store in Ogden has created their very own local niche of customers who shoot and reload whereas they survive selling, believe it or not guns, bikes and barbeques. Great folks that every year distribute the oldey timey Remington Calendars this time of year free to those who come in as they have for the last 65 years. If in Ogden drop by and check them out. My dealer of choice on getting an AR556 was one who was at the announcement
of the new model at another huge gun store and ordered 6 of them THAT day so he's
quite aware of the model; he just hasn't been able to lay hands on a single one
through his distributors, much to my dismay.
