Cruised into the local Cabelas yesterday and found a pristine RSS5W, 20-71565 with box and paperwork for a reasonable price. Called records this morning and found out the gun shipped in Sept 1970 as LR only. It has the Black Eagles, Inc bbl and circled R trademark. There is no star, arrow or anyother marking I can find to indicate LR cylinder only. Isn't this pretty late for a LR Only RSS5W?

Not at all. The RSS5W was cataloged right up through the end of OM production. It is estimated that only 5% of all fixed sight RSS production after 1963 was of the RSS5W model.
A great find!!
You can tell an RSS5W (or even a post '62 RSSMW) in that the last three digits of the serial number will not be on the end of the cylinder, either stamped ('63 and before) or scratched ('64 or later). This is because there was no reason to have to take the LR cylinder out of the gun again once it had been fitted, unlike the convertible models.

Chad you forget about my 368441. It is a 22 LR only and has the last 3 numbers scratched on the cylinder.

Oh I remembered it. Its just one of those guns that comes along every once in a while that throws a wrench in things. Yours is the only one that has ever been reported like this. The employee must have thought he was doing a convertible or something
