    turtle porn

I frequently stop to help them across a busy road. Big snappers around here, usually. They take a careful hand! I have read several times that if relocating, you absolutely must mark each shell as to what side is up, and replace them the same. They will not develop otherwise. No box turtles...

    Scored a Security Six shorty

My first new out of the box handgun was a 2 3/4 stainless Security Six. I foolishly traded it toward something else over 20 years ago, and missed it from the day. I would happily pick up another.

Winter home 'smithing project input please.

Yep, alot of the grip would be covered, considering that. But grips come and go. But at the same time...I hadnt put much thought into a steel grip, which of course could be parkerized along with the rest of it...a thought. Just the sort of input looking for.

Winter home 'smithing project input please.

I am planning a couple of over the winter projects. I am going to parkerize two of my handguns: My smith 36 (primary cary piece) and my .357 Blackhawk. I am well familiar with both their mechanics, and it is no problem for me to totally disassemble and reassemble either. My Blackhawk I hope to...

    Winchester .375 Lever Gun

Seems high to me. Even the post 64s are commanding near pre 64 prices in this area (NYS) but it still seems probably 150. or so high. Side mount scope doesnt do anything for it. They are a open sight (or aperture) gun.

Browning 1885 45/70 Rocky Mt Elk Foundation Commemorative

I have the 1885 in 45-70, blued. I have a Leupold VX111 in 1.5x5 on it. It is my favorite rifle, but yours is prettier. Alot! I have the same bases as you, and as mine is the plain Jane, I am content with them. Other than being a bit drab, they are a darn fine base.

Debating the purchase of Ruger M77 Mark II .300WM

The hardcover case and ammo is tough to value of course, range in price and quality varying greatly. For me they would be "boot" to a deal. They come with factory rings.I paid about 400 for mine new (same, M77 Mk 11 300 WM) about 15 years ago, in blue with walnut stock. I agree, Magna Porting...

Ruger or Not Ruger for Hunting...

My go to rifle is a Ruger MK 11 in .308, with a .300 win mag in the same for the very rare need for something bigger. Apples vs. oranges, but brand wise get the shoe that fits. Over a period of time I improved my .308 with a Timney trigger, bedded action and competition firing pin and spring- as...

    lever action

Not quite sure what you mean by a "high caliber". Of course, everyone thinks of the 30-30 when they say lever action. It is a good moderate range cartridge, but certainly there are many other cartridge options. I prefer the Winchester 94 myself (which is very limited for cartridges: essentially...

    I have this old gun......RECEIPT

Several years ago my Uncle asked if I was interested in a .22 he had. It was a Springfield semi.I dont remember the model, but it was in fantastic shape. I didnt really need it, and hoped to interest my cousins in it so i passed. About a year later I found the factory hang tag/envelope for that...

    M77 300 win mag

Two sets of ruger mounts I had did not mate square with the scopes I put on (Leupold), and a machinists strait edge confirmed the mounts were off. I think Hoppes is fine for routine cleaning, but after having Shooters Choice recommended to me, I gave it a try. After cleaning a rifle with Hoppes...

    M77 300 win mag

OOps, missed this on my post: I do replace all my factory rings with Leopold scope mounts and rings. They are much more square and mate with the scopes much cleaner. Little things add up to alot.

    M77 300 win mag

I shoot my own reloads. Tailor the round to what you will hunt, not the biggest bang you can get. I think alot of people are thrown off by the bang and kick- which I never thought was that bad- like a stiff 30-06. Wear a thick coat, good hearing protection, and limit how many shots at one time...

Wanting to strip lacquer stock and do an oil finish.

Tru oil is an easy to use and durable finish. You can leave it shiny or steel wool it - super fine- to a natural finish. If you like a rubbed linseed oil finish, it takes alot more work. The old routine is to generously rub in an application a day for a week, , then once a week for a month...
