Well, I hate to break it to you guys but Remington Thunderbolt ammo is made by the same guys/company that makes Federal and CCI. All of these companies are owned and controlled by Jason Vanderbrink CEO at Vista Outdoors. In regards to the projectiles, all 22 rimfire bullets are made of pure lead, as soft as it gets. I am sure there is some hardness on the surface imparted by the swaging process but not much due to the nature of lead. Some of the better bullets have mechanical coating of copper or brass which raises the hardness a little. I have never encountered a plated standard velocity 22 LR. Some of the most accurate SV Target has the gooies
I will admit, when someone brings a 22 semi-auto in for malfunctioning, I use the Remington Thunderbolt to make sure the firearm has a chance of functioning with the other popular brands.

I agree with the negative comments on the Thunderbolts. Doesn't matter who makes them, they are still junk.

I do believe you can take apart the 10/22 magazines and clean the insides. It isn't that difficult, but they probably do stick when new regardless.

Vipers and yellow jackets are still on the Remington website . Vipers in stock. I have been ordering most of my rimfire and some shotshell directly from the manufacturers in the past year or more . I have better luck there than stores finding it .

If you've ever tried to use Thunderbolt .22s at ranges over 100 yards you know how much variation there is in the powder charge. They're really inconsistent. Shooting at an empty gallon paint can out in the desert, one shot would go over and another would fall 10' short. From a steady rest, with an accurate rifle. Then there's the duds.

And this was before the covid plandemic and attendant deterioration in the quality of nearly everything.

Good to know for most. For myself switched to 22 magnum a long time ago using CCI or Hornady ammo. Great for dem varmints and accurate out of my R/A Compact.

I probably wouldn't use it if it was free. I remember finding coils of lead working their way out the end of the barrel.
So did I some years ago, when my dad and I took his Bearcat to the range with a box of Thunderbolts. When cleaning it afterward, I was getting chunks of lead out of the barrel. That leading only seems to happen with Thunderbolts, at least as far as that particular gun goes. Did the same out of my early nineties-vintage Single Six, but not as badly.

Mom still keeps my dad's old Bearcat as a bedside gun. It's loaded with quality CCI Stingers, thank you very much, and I made sure none of that crap Thunderbolt ammo is still in the house. ;)

"Wonder why? Shitty powder?"

Inconsistent powder charges, inconsistent crimps, inconsistent priming, who knows? Remington obviously just wanted to shovel the crap out the door without regard to its quality.

Anyone remember the Remington 22 rimfire from the mid 70s. What was it ? Name of it .
I happen to have an unopened circa 1976 brick of the stuff in my garage--green and yellow cardboard boxes. It's just called Remington High Velocity .22 Long Rifle, stock #1522. It also came in yellow-tinted plastic boxes of 100--I shot up plenty of those, too, back in the day.

Used to be a website that was nothing but an informative 22rimfire box collectors site . It had literally hundreds of informative photos of old 22 boxes including store brands like hardware 's and such .The site is gone now sadly . There were some real cool boxes back in the day .👍. This thread reminded me of it . I recall riding my bicycle to our local General store with lawn mowing money in my pocket to buy A box or two of 22s.

👍 Yes , Snake45 I think that is it . I had that saved in my favorites from about 7 maybe 8 years ago. I originally found it from a post over at rimfirecentral. I finally deleted the link to it a year or so ago . It was giving 404 not found ? Anyway, not really a big time box collector but I do have few 50 rd boxes of this and that that I just never shot . Even have a few paper shotgun shells . I just enjoy reading up on those old brands . Thanks for that link .
