6. SPF "The General and the Jaguar: Pershing's Hunt for Pancho Villa" by Eileen Welsome. Pulitzer-winning reporter's history of the Mexican conflicts that let to Villa's brief invasion of the US and our invasion of Mexico in 1916, which very nearly set off a war between the two nations. A brief history of the Mexican revolutions, Villa's personal history, and a great narrative of the Pershing "counterinsurgency" campaign, including Lt. George Patton's part. Written in 1994, this guidebook isn't for vacation reservation info, but the history, natural and human, hasn't changed and THAT'S here! 9) SPF "The Enders Hotel: A Memoir" by Brandon Schrand. Growing up in an old hotel built in 1917 in Soda Springs, ID. A '70s childhood in Idaho with some tough times and hard folks. Quality PB 236 pp. new/exc. cond (U. Nebraska Bison Press) $5

10) "American Gunfight: the Plot to Kill Harry Truman and the Shoot-out That Stopped It" by Stephen Hunter and John Bainbridge, Jr. Thriller writer and DC lawyer explain the Puerto Rican nationalist movement that led terrorists to attack the US president in the White House and the gunfight that ended it. 12) SPF "Into a Desert Place: A 3000 Mile Walk Around the Coast of Baja California" by Graham Mackintosh. English couch potato takes on some of the world's toughest terrain and ends up "Adventure Traveler of the Year." All the details: people, critters, bites, stings.... 13). SPF "God and Mr. Gomez" by Jack Smith. The hilarious account of how the author and his wife learn that BOTH God and Mr. Gomez are needed to build their vacation house in Baja California in 1974. Good stories about Baja as it was (and often still is). By a reporter who was a WWII USMC vet. HB in exc. cond. 219 pp. Signed and inscribed by the author. $6

14) "Two in the Far North" by Margaret Murie. Memoir of the first woman graduate of the University of Alaska which details her life in the Alaskan wilderness with her US Fish and Game biologist husband from 1921 to 1961 (see his book on animal tracks below). Excellent nature writing, charming woodcut illustrations. Oversized quality PB 371 pp. in exc. cond. $6

15) "Empire on Ice" by Willy Lou Warbelow. Story of Alaska in the 1940s--a Wisconsin couple teach school in an Arctic Eskimo village from 1945-48. Details of Eskimo, frontier life, hunting, trapping. Quality PB 254 pp in new cond illus w/many full page original b/w photos. Signed and inscribed by the author. $7

16) "The Gold of Troy: The Story of Heinrich Schliemann and the Buried Cities of Ancient Greece" by Robert Payne. Obsessed 19th century German store clerk turned tycoon persistently follows his dream and finds the real city of Troy. A true story worthy of a novel. 17) "Justice in the Mountains" by Deane C. Davis. Stories of a Vermont country lawyer who later became a judge and governor of Vermont. Cases and their backgrounds from the 1920s and '30s, from adultery and murder to undersized trout! PB new cond. 185 pp. illus w/drawings. $5

18) "No Picnic on Mt. Kenya" by Felice Benuzzi. True story of three Italian POWs in Africa who escaped from their British prison camp to climb Mt. Kenya, and return to their camp alive! A very tough prank. Details their preparation, escape, the climb, the return, and the consequences. (Mt. Kenya is 17K + high!). Quality PB exc. cond 240 pp. illus w/maps. $6

19) "Adventuring in East Africa: the Sierra Club Guide to the Great Safaris of Kenya, Tanzania, Eastern Zaire, Rwanda, and Uganda" by Allen Beckby. NOT a hunting book, but good basic information on how photographic safaris work and what kinds are available, African nature, and basic African travel issues. 22) SPF "A Fine and Pleasant Misery" by Patrick McManus. Humorous essays on the fun and foolishness of fishing, fishermen, and fish by the "Field and Stream" and "Sports Illustrated" staff writer. Paperback 209 pp. in exc. cond. $5

23) SPF Stalking the Wild Asparagus" by Ewell Gibbons. Classic book that helped popularize wild foods. Includes tracks in sand, mud, earth, and snow; scats, rugs and antler/bone gnawing marks! Covers North American mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, and domestic animals. 27) "The Readers Digest Guide to American Wildlife" by the editors of Readers Digest. An excellent family guide to all major North American birds, animals, plants, trees, wildflowers, mushrooms,etc. including insects, reptiles, arachnids, fish, and snails. Describes each and shows range it inhabits. Chapters on all major habitat types and what lives there. Heavily illus w/color plates and maps.

A home resource that is really an encyclopedia of world wildlife. 10x11" ring binder filled with hundreds of two-sided full color sheets that fold out into 9x16" profiles of each animal. Each includes life-cycle, habitat, breeding, food and hunting, related species, physical characteristics, and any conservation issues. Sections on mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes, invertebrates, animal behavior, world habitats, and general conservation topics. 29) SPF "The Tin Goose: Ford's Fabulous Tri-Motor" by Douglas J. Ingalls. History of "The Ford that Flew" and its ancestors made by Stout Aircraft. R&D, airline and freight services, military use. Many historic b/w photos. Softbound 8 1/2x11" Aero Publication. 96 pp. in exc. shape. $6

30) SPF "The Smithsonian Book of Flight" by Walter J. Boyne. Director of the National Aerospace Museum's history of human flight from Renaissance dreams to the Space Age. Oversized HB 9x11" 288 pp. in near new cond. w/hundreds of b/w, color photos, some full-page, and full color combat paintings. Boyne was a 26-year USAF veteran bomber pilot who has authored numerous books on specific historic planes. $9 (heavy to ship).

31) SPF "Fighting Jets" by Bryce Walker. A Time-Life book full of photographs, color combat paintings, and color plates of aircraft good for modelers. From the first WWII jets to the A-10, F-16, and Mig 29, describes jet combat in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Arab-Isreali Wars, and the Falklands. 8 1/2x11" hardbound 176 pp. in exc. cond. $5

32) "Russia's Top Guns: Soviet Air Power" An encyclopedia of all Soviet military aircraft from the Korean War through 1990. 36) SPF "Ordeal By Fire: the Civil War and Reconstruction" by James M. McPherson. First 2/3 of the book is a very succinct history of the Civil War.
