Was waiting for someone to bring up the vodka..........late 70s/early 80's we had parties in the middle of a field, keg in a trash can in one truck melons injected with Vodka in another truck. It also worked well injected into oranges.......
Doggonit...you beat me by 1/2 hour (I was out shopping at the Navy commissary).....we would plug (triangular hole) the watermelon.....run a knife down into the hole a few times and then (apparently we were much classier than your bunch) fill it with a nice Rose or Chardonnay...let it sit for a bit then dive right on in. You could do this before going to a State Park that had No Alcohol Permitted rules.

I like watermelon. Frankly the genetically engineered stuff you buy in stores are pretty bland (like most fruits and vegetables these days).

So, I grow my own. Not a big patch but always enough to share some with neighbors.

Speaking of sharing, growing up pretty much every house had a garden. Our parents lived through the depression and a world war. They understood the value of growing your own.

Harvest times folks would always take extra to their neighbors. But there was a priority. Older folks of those with injuries or illnesses came first. Big families or those having a hard time next. Then everyone else.

Most folks grew a few things. But we had a few that cultivated darned near every square inch of ground. Sure they had the usual vegetables but you would find corn and such

Doesn't everyone know that watermelon seeds are edible??? However I usually get my watermelon from the local fruit stand that gets all their fruit locally. I think the best ones are the solid dark green ones. The striped ones are second best. Now is peach season, so the best peaches are in now.

I guess I don't really understand some of the comments here. Just yesterday I ate about the sweetest and tastiest watermelon that I have ever eaten, and all without a single black seed. Having to stop and spit out the black seeds makes eating watermelon a pain, so the seedless is the only way to go, in my opinion.
"Stop and spit out the seeds?" The trick is to sort of eject the seeds out of the corner of your mouth while eating, sort of like a reject.

As to watermelon stories:

Around 1953 or 1954, a local grocery store had a sale on watermelons, ninety nine cents a DOZEN! My mother wanted two dozen, and my girl friend's parents wanted a dozen. Since my Dad had our car at work, we took my girl friend's parents' car, the old humpbacked 1950 (or 1951) Nash. The wheel wells on that car made sharp turns impossible. Since my girlfriend was not a real experience driver, driving fell upon me, then just over the age of sixteen. When we loaded three dozen watermelons into the trunk and back seat of that old Nash, the rear end was down on the axle!

We had watermelon often for awhile. Always cringed when the Ol' Gunny blew up those melons!

And..............back in the day, every Baptist Church in Memphis had a watermelon supper a time or two during the summer.

The deacons would set up long wooden tables in the church parking lot, and the lights turned on. And those lights attracte those chicken chokers buzzing around. The women were always wary about getting those in their hair.

But the pastor had to offer thanks for the watermelons, then all lined up for a slice as deacons sliced and distributed the slices. And afterward soggy newspapers were collected and dumped in the trash, and the table and parking lot were hosed down. And sometimes some kids got hosed down as well.

My mom used to make watermelon pickles out of the rinds. I've seen them commercially, but they don't have the same flavor. I remember my mom's had cloves and some other spices in them.

And well, like most things, especially bread, homemade is far better. Even today.

Solid green ones must be Sugar Baby's. When properly ripe, they are sweeter than Crimson's IMO.
