Dad had an Army buddy who lived In Arkansas just south of the MO 'bootheel'. Dad and Mom made a trip down there almost every year at either 'watermelon time' or 'peach pickin time' and brought back a load of one or the other. Seems watermelons taste better when grown further south. Put one in the 'milk cooler' (big refrigerated tank that 10 gallon cans of milk were kept in waiting for collection) and it was so cold it made your teeth hurt but was so good, you didn't care. :D

I guess I don't really understand some of the comments here. Just yesterday I ate about the sweetest and tastiest watermelon that I have ever eaten, and all without a single black seed. Having to stop and spit out the black seeds makes eating watermelon a pain, so the seedless is the only way to go, in my opinion.
Isn't spitting the seeds half the fun of eating a watermelon? :D

I remember, as a kid, squeezing the seeds between the thumb and index finger until they went shooting out.

We always ate watermelon with a spoon or fork and sorted out the seeds. Couldn't eat watermelon outside w/o being swarmed by either flies or mosquitoes and Mom was picky about kids stringing watermelon juice all over the table.

I only have watermelon once or twice a year. Don't go out of my way for it but it is nice chilled on a hot summer day, spiked with vodka was the way we did it camping out at the Summer National Drags at Englishtown back in 70's-early 80's. Miss those summer trips with the gang. Salt, nope
Was waiting for someone to bring up the vodka..........late 70s/early 80's we had parties in the middle of a field, keg in a trash can in one truck melons injected with Vodka in another truck. It also worked well injected into oranges.......
