This thread my not go beyond this post, but here goes. If you were limited to, God forbid, 2 centerfire rifles for all of your hunting, which rifle/cartridge combos would you pick? It does not necessarily have to be Rugers. My picks would be A Winchester M70 or Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 270 Win. with a 3x9 scope and a Marlin 336 in 30-30 Win or 35 Rem. with a receiver sight. I know these guns a very boring, but after 45 years of shooting and hunting and being a long time rifle loonie, that would be my choice. What would you choose? RJ

Two that I have seem to fit my hunting needs just fine.... a 96/44 and a .30-06 M77.

Now, how about target/varmint..... I still need that .223 Savage Model 12FV. And then there's my Granddad's Model 1873 Winchester; that's going to my son someday. I guess it has to be... "which 4 rifles would you pick".

More info is required regarding these beautiful rifles. Make? Caliber? Very nice.

I love your rifle if you ever decide to part with her hit me up. 243 is my go to also.

Thanks! I have to admit that I do not shoot it much. I bought it to be used for deer and I just don't get into rifle country when deer hunting. It has been in my safe for about 10 years now I think.

I have been hunting a farm with my dad and we are in a shotgun/pistol zone.

The bottom one is a Kimber in .300 WSM. It has never been shot. I have scoped it but it just hasn't been to the range yet. I may never shoot it at the rate that I am going.

Top is a M77 MKII in .243. I bought it with a boat paddle stock, brand new. Ditched the stock, the new one is a lightweight that has been glass bedded and free floated, I had a trigger job done on it, I polished the raceways for the bolt, installed a heavier firing pin spring, jeweled the bolt, installed the Leupold VXII scope and changed out the stock hardware to stainless. Yes, including the grip cap.

The Kimber is a .300 WSM. Here is the Kimber's stock up close.

They are both very attractive girls and I like you would be pleased to own them. I have been trying to find a wood stock for my 243 stainless all weather but have not yet. I bet your gun with the boat paddle stock was a little bit rare with it haveing open sights and all stainless. Do you still have the boat paddle stock? I have the ugly old hollow body stock and anything is better than it. Again great looking rifles thanks for sharing.

Yes I do have it. It only lasted a couple of weeks on the rifle after I bought it. I bought the ultra lite stock through Brownells. I had to pay some big bucks for it but it was brand new when I got it. I knew in my head when I ordered the stock that I was doing the right thing and it would look good when it came together. I was more than happy with the results. The contour of the barrel and the front of the stock, to me, look perfect together. I think Ruger should consider making a light weight rifle like this to sell. Everyone who knows rifles when they see one likes the look of this and they ask where I got this one.

Thank for the kind words,

Jay

For all I'll ever hunt or have hunted. It would be a Hawkeye in 30/06 with a 22 inch barrel with sights, blue and walnut and a similarly configured 223. I suspect I would have to modify factory rifles to get to them just the way I wanted them. I think, I would add matching pair of 3x9 40mm Leupolds with plex hairs. Then, I'd probably get weak and start adding.

First up would be My Polytech M14S--or better yet, a genuine Springfield Armory M1A in .308.

Second would be either my Rem 700V in .243, or some sort of AR-15. I could get along nicely with my Rock River Midlength.

Model 1886 Winchester 45-70 for big game like Buffalo, and Bears. Model 1894 Winchester 30-30 for Deer and Elk.

Now that the new modern AR15 is coming out in other cals. you really only need one and just change the uppers to the cal. you need for the hunt, but I still like my old lever guns for hunting.
