Which Brand of Taxi Do You Prefer?

in a similiar vein, when I was working, when asked what I drive the reply was National (the rental car). I did get to a point manufactor band did npt matter as much as size of the vehicle. expidition was just as good as a tahoe.

as for the predictions of that article. It seems to ignore the non metropliatan areas of the country. that said. if the article becomes true, how will the entering of a "self driving" city be a accomplished by someone for the rural areas. Probably sort of like when I worked in remote areas out of country and to wanted to spend days off in City, I would leave car just out of the city and use a taxi to get me around.

Where I live Rural Maine small town no buses no taxis most folks drive Pick Ups which
are mostly 4X4's with a plow. Driving in these parts is a necessity, I live 4 miles from
town and work sometimes over an hour each way. I do not see my life without a pick
up need it for my work and around the house heck they get 40 bucks to plow you out
after a storm. Really adds up. Seen on the news last week before our last storm Bangor had
109 ins. of snow to date this season. Here would easily be 125 we are an hour north.
My pick up is my lifeline. ps

I don't ride in no stinking taxis. Most of the drivers can't drive and you have to listen to Abdula or Mohammad go on and on about some new Indian movie star no one has ever heard of while playing weird music on his radio.

It's been years since I last rode in a taxi. I'm hoping it won't happen again. One memorable ride was in Oklahoma City. I arrived in OKC in the evening for a stint in the FAA Academy. I caught a cab with a lady driver at the airport and we headed for town where my hotel was. About halfway the cab blew a rear tire and we pulled over under and overpass with no radio contact. The lady had no idea how to change a tire so I did, wearing a business suit. Once the tire was changed we got to the hotel. As I got out of the cab with my suitcase the lady proceeded to curse at me calling me a cheap @#%# because I didn't offer her a tip. I argued that I certainly did, when I told her she should learn how to change a damn tire.

I've always been partial to Checker. I almost bought a wagon a couple months ago but it had some rust in the roof. Being from CA I just avoid rusty cars even though this one was a little easily fixed spot.

Hi,

Taxis have never been the same since Checker closed the doors... I've heard some have, and often wondered how many Checkers have had over a million miles on the clock?

A while back I had to go to the hospital by ambulance. A couple of days later they released me at 0200 hours. That's 2AM in the morning for the non-military types. The hospital called for a cab and it was a Yellow cab, a Prius no less. That thing was about beat to death. Driver was surly and when we got to the house it was $30. Didn't have quite enough so had to go into the house to get the rest. Driver followed me like an F86 on a Mig 15. I paid him the exact amount with no tip and when he griped I said, "You hit me for $30 for a 6 mile run, was surly all the way here, came into my house uninvited and you want a tip? I should had added he drove 20 to 25 MPH on streets with a 45 MPH limit. Those damn meters charge by the mile and time on the road.

Where I lived as a kid the one larger city had ex-Dodge Diplomats and Gran Fury police cars, then when that supply was exhausted, they all got Chrysler K cars. Now most of the bigger outfits run Crown Vics. The nicest cab though is a local man who caters to the smaller towns, he had a Buick Lesabre, but right now, he has a late 1990's Caddy with all the trim.
If I had to pick, it would be the Diplomat/ Gran Furys, because when I was 14 during one summer I had to take one quite a lot to work my summer job when my parents would go on vacation and leave me home to tend to the dogs.

Most of the taxis that I ever had to take were usually beyond worn out beater cars. Some were clean , some were not. Some drivers were decent people, some not. I haven't been impressed with Uber. The two times that I have had to use it, the cars smelled like rolling ashtrays. My clothes reeked of smoke to the point that others around me thought that I was a heavy smoker. One driver also had umm, well, different culural standards for personal hygiene, but was a nice guy.
Riding a bus isn't much better I won't let my wife ride anymore since someone was always trying to either sell her drugs or buy sex.
My son will occasionally take the light rail line to work from college since it almost door to door and free since he is a college student. But he has also witnessed drug deals and there has been a robbery/murder minutes before at his stop.
So we try to keep to our own vehicles as much as possible.
As far as having a preference for the type of vehicle, like Chevy vs BMW. Who cares? I am going a few miles, not cross country.

Hi I rode in one once in the Bahamas a VW bus with about 8 other passengers first time on the other side of the road doing about 80 mph I had some color in my hair until that ride

I understand the term TAXI. Aint' seen one round here in 40+ years. If you need a ride you get family or friends to take you.
Why would anyone live in a dadgun city?

I got a ride from a Motorcycle Taxi one time; He didn't speak English and I didn't speak Thai, but he found a girl who spoke both and we got to my destination and the cost wasn't all that high (yeah I gave him a tip too).
The most terrifying taxi ride was in Japan from Tachikawa (sp) AFB to the train station; First time with a right hand drive, came around a curve and thought we were going to hit that tanker truck going the other way !!

The real fun part of a taxi in the Bahamas is when the car is for driving in the US on the right and they are driving on the left. I was riding in one and sitting in the front. When they decided to pass a car I could see oncoming traffic before the driver. Raises the 'pucker factor' quite a bit. That was probably the last taxi ride I have taken.
