I’d rather live in Prescott. Close enough to the other cities and still have a small town feel. Flag got over 140 inches of snow.

My parents lived there for a long time. I was foreman at Prescott cabinets for two years. The country around there kinda reminded me of the rural areas around Denver, where I grew up. (they're both a mile high. Well, since Colorado legalized pot, it may be a little higher now ;)) Ruger has a plant in Prescott. That's a good thing. ;) If it hadn't been overrun by tourists and two-dollar millionaires, Sedona was nice when I lived there in the late 80's. A short drive up Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff for some decent hunting. I retired here in Central Oregon 12 yrs. ago. (lived here for 47 yrs.) The politics in Oregon now have me rethinking that decision.

Eastern North Carolina is where we settled. Beaches, great freshwater and saltwater fishing within easy canoe paddle. We have great local produce, cheap pork products, mountains out west and great weather.

I am going to try to make it to 62 before I retire (4 more years). A lot could happen between now & then. I grew up & have lived all my life in the Atlanta area. I am tired of the constant influx of more people. I've been thiinking pretty hard about L.A.-That is to say Lower Alabama. Property values are lower there than here. It would be possible to sell my home, pay off any remaining debt I have & move there & buy a nice home on more land than I have here. I need to do some more investigation but I like the concept. It would also work out well as I have family in the Atlanta area & a sister that lives near Pensacola on Perdido Key. I could be kind of in between where it wouldn't be too hard to go see people either direction.

Just can’t find better weather than where I’m living. Almost added the “at”. How many of you living in most of the places mentioned (Florida is the exception ) went to the beach earlier this month? Without leaving the state where you reside.
Personally speaking so please no offense meant here when I say the beach is terrible, hot, to much sun sunburn ,salty water , over priced food, high prices.
I will retire to the mountians in my same state . Fresh clear water, fishing, shade galore, winter time snow covered scenery , cool rains, wildlife scenery, majestic views, hunting, low low population.

That's not the West Virginia or Western Virginia I left over 48 years ago. Missable cold, coal furnaces, wood stoves, bad roads and poor people and there's definitely a reason for low population. No offense, but I was never so glad to see any place in my rear view mirror more. ;)

It’s a hard choice deciding where to retire.
I heard it said that a person needs ‘to retire to Something“ and not ‘Retire from Something“
IL. was great in the 80’s and 90’s, but now now. AZ has exceeded all my expectations.
I hate winter, cold and humidity, but even after a hellacious July, the AZ heat doesn’t bother me.
And I look forward to seeing Sunrise and a sunny day every day.
Never thought I would shoot skeet at 6:30 am.

I moved to this area from L.A. when I was 22 after I got out of the AF. Retired in 2008. I love it here. Seasonal weather, lots of places to go visit all within an hour's drive or so. Lots of events to go to during the late summer/fall. I don't want to say where I am at as it started to get over populated sometime ago. Those who have read my posts prob already know where I am at. Guess I will end up here/there ashes scattered.
The only place I would like to visit would be North Island in New Zealand to see Auckland, the national park west of there and the west coast beaches.

6. The four seasons are: tolerable, hot, really hot, and ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

-OR-

You can retire to California where…

1. You make over $450,000 and you still can't afford to buy a house.
2. The fastest part of your commute is going down your driveway
3. You know how to eat an artichoke.
4. When someone asks you how far something is, you tell them how long it will take to get there rather than how many miles away it is.
5. The four seasons are: Fire, Flood, Mud and Drought.

-OR-

You can retire to New York City where…

1 You say "the city" and expect everyone to know you mean Manhattan.
2. You can get into a four-hour argument about how to get from Columbus Circle to Battery Park, but can't find Wisconsin on a map.
3. You think Central Park is "nature.”
4. You believe that being able to swear at people in their own language makes you multilingual.
5. You've worn out a car horn. (IF you have a car.)
6. You think eye contact is an act of aggression

-OR-

You can retire to Minnesota where…

1. You only have three spices: salt, pepper and ketchup
2. Halloween costumes have to fit over parkas.
3. You have seventeen recipes for casserole.
4. Sexy lingerie is anything flannel with less than eight buttons.
5. The four seasons are: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road repair.

-OR-

You can retire to The Deep South where.

1. You can rent a movie and buy bait in the same store.
2 "Y'all" is singular and "all y'all" is plural.
3. "He needed killin " is a valid defense.
4. Everyone has two first names: Billy Bob, Jimmy Bob, Joe Bob, Betty Jean, Mary Beth, etc.
5. Everything is either: "in yonder," "over yonder" or "out yonder. ”
6. You can say anything about anyone, as long as you say "Bless his heart” at the end!

-OR-

You can move to Colorado where…

1. You carry your $3,000 mountain bike atop your $500 car.
2. You tell your husband to pick up Granola on his way home, so he stops at the day care center.
3. A pass does not involve a football or dating.
4. The top of your head is bald, but you still have a pony tail .

-OR-

You can retire to Nebraska or Kansas where…

1. You've never met any celebrities, but the mayor knows your name.
2. Your idea of a traffic jam is three cars waiting to pass a tractor.
3. You have had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" on the same day.
4. You end every sentence with a preposition; "Where's my coat at?”

-OR-

FINALLY you can retire to Florida where…

1. You eat dinner at 3:15 in the afternoon.
2. All purchases include a coupon of some kind - even houses and cars.
3. Everyone can recommend an excellent cardiologist, dermatologist, proctologist, podiatrist, or orthopedist.
4. Road construction never ends anywhere in the state.

Interesting that things can change in just a few short years. This thread started a little over two and a half years ago. At the time I thought I’d die in that home in Idaho. But it’s hard not to compare. I had spent 33 years in Alaska. Our son stayed in Alaska, my wife’s family is in Alaska, and I can deal with the cold easier than the heat. Almost a year since we came back. I got to experience the whole 123” of snow this past winter, and I don’t care. I missed Alaska, I missed our family and as green as Idaho can be, I don’t know anywhere any greener than Alaska in the summer. Did I mention the grand kids? How can you not enjoy spoiling them? All I can tell you is I’m back home.

That would be kind of HARD for me; Dad was Navy:
Born: Portsmouth, VA Naval Hospital
Lived: Bremerton, Wa; Chicago, IL; Boston, Ma; San Diego, CA; Huntington Beach, Ca, Honolulu, Hawaii;
Ford Island, Pearl Harbor; Pensacola, FL; Frazier then Millington, TN; Jacksonville, FL; Bloomingdale, PA; Port Lyautey, French Morocco; Bartlesville, OK; Portland, Or; Monterey Park, CA; Oklahoma City, OK; Garden Grove, CA; Whittier, CA; Orange, CA; Long Beach, CA; Chino, Ca; Baltimore, MD area; Hagerstown, MD; Orlando, FL; Tampa, FL and Finally, Zephyrhills Area, FL .
Wow I know some of those places....did PT/Recovery at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, went to EBAT and Aviation Ordnance A School in Millington, TN, spent awhile stationed in San Diego, Grew up (5th grade to Boot Camp) in Baltimore County....I can tell you with 100% sincerity to not even think about retiring in Baltimore MD or Hagerstown MD...unless you thrive on violence and heroin....unfortunately I frequent both for my job, dealing with violence and heroin.

I will most likely retire here on top of my "mountain" overlooking the fields of souls from blue and gray soldiers......

Every place has it up and down side; It's hot in Florida, but all our kids and grandkids live within 10 minutes of us and all my doctors are 5 minutes from the house. Grandkids start graduating from high school between 2024 and 2026, so I definitely understand the about the kids and grandkids.
