I worked, toured or lived in probably 85 % of the country. We ended up in Cedar City SW Utah. Probably cheap as anywhere. Mesquite Az for casino fun and eats 1 1/2 hour away. We live at 5,500 ft. Want warmer drive 40 miles south to St. George where no matter what time of the year it`s always 15 degrees hotter. Want cooler? drive 30 miles up the mountain to the ski areas. Has a good hospital and everything else you need. A few miles out of town mostly BLM and ATV trails. Cedar Breaks, Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks a short drive. Mixture of tourists, sheepherders, cowboys, Indians and polygamists'.
Now I am bed ridden so it dont much matter.

Say what you want about the south; how many do you think retire and move north?

What I will say about the South is that a day with anything under 95% humidity is considered a low humidity day. I was stationed at three different AF bases in the South, so I know about humidity.

Given the opportunity we agree it would be somewhere north of Tucson.
North is fine. South is dangerous. You get more than half way to the border and the
coyotes come by (smuggling illegals) with guns and demand food and water.
Usually only happens once or twice. After the owner gets infrared cameras, any
stranger coming on the property after dark gets to dodge hot lead.

Wife and I just retired early, settling in Northwest Michigan. We love it here. The cold weather doesn't bother us a bit.

Things I've learned from almost 4 months of retirement:

- I rarely leave my rural acreage.
- I'm very busy every day and collapse at the day's end.
- I don't miss my last employer but DO miss the Army.
- I don't miss people.

To retire comfortably I need to win the lotto so I can:

Upgrade the place here to Colorado insulation standards (WAY more than used
here). Live here from November to March.

Get a place in Hawaii for April, May, September and October (nice weather and
a LOT less toooooorists).

Get a place in/near Olathe CO, for June, July and August. Great weather, nice
people, and Olathe corn for ten cents per ear. 8)

Wow........ My wife and I were just talking about this..... Very complicated issue.

I currently live in the socialist state of Washington. The politics and liberal attitudes are nearly unbearable. Living across the river from Portland, Oregon doesn't help in that regard.

A friend lives year around in Arizona after living in Washington most of his life. When we are indoors because of winter rain, his weather is pleasant enough. However for 8-9 months out of the year it would be intolerable to us because of the heat.

I have lots of family in the Fargo area of North Dakota. Winters are an issue, but politics are more to my liking. So far this may be our best option, although my brother lives in Blairsville, Georgia and weather seems tolerable as is the LOCAL political scene.

Because my Son's, other Brothers and a Grandson live here along with my wife's surviving family, this may be where we stay.... Tough decisions going forward. I sure want out of the leftist Pacific Northwest. We shall see.

I like it here in Idaho. And, I could probably live somewhere else, but I don't know where that would be. But there were a lot of groups who liked to here my old back in the day story's. I miss it. I miss the gun shows. I miss my son whose still up there. But it's warmer here, and cheaper to live here. Miss you too Scott.

A question for you year round AZ residents.
What about the Flagstaff area?
Gary (toyhunt) should chime in shortly, he lives there.

I looked at Flagstaff and found it runs about five degrees (year around) warmer than
Denver. LOVELY area, with minimal designated shooting ranges.

My main complaint is the liberals and the university. From every thing that I could
see, if you do not live in the North East portion, you would be inundated by liberals.
Add to that the property "values" have gone from reasonable to INSANE in the last
four years. Property that I was looking at four years ago has doubled, or more.

The countryside is BEAUTIFUL! Just the university has ruined the liveability.

When I retired from the PD in Alabama, I knew I wanted to move. Alabama is a nice place to live, but I hated the heat and humidity. I knew I wanted to stay in the South, so I moved to the Southern Appalachians.

Unfortunately, right after I moved, I was told that we were full up and nobody else, especially those that have Yankee accents, was allowed in. :D

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

So true. IMO you need 2 places to retire. 1 up north , 1 down south.

hate to tell ya, but the Yankees moved in in 1865 and haven't left yet.
if it wasn't for the fact that western va is a weather sqeeze point for all bad weather moving east thru the blue ridge, and that the blue ridge tends to funnel and block all the bad weather, id be there too.
so I settled for ..........aint tellin. :>

I retired ten years ago, to the same place I've lived for the last forty-five. After spending a few years traveling the U S, Central Oregon, until the influx of valley politics ruins it completely, is the place for me.

Gilligan's Island, but now that Mary Ann is gone. I don't know where. Guess I will stay in Idaho. Watching the New Years Eve Idaho potato drop is worth it.

You forgot in New York where the F bomb can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, determiner, or exclamation.

We retired from CA to NC and love it all, the taxes, weather, beach, but most of all the people!
