When At Home Do You Keep Your Doors Locked?

We do.

Once, many years ago at a different home I had a guy simply open my front door and walk in.

Fortunately, he was just an idiot trying to sell newspaper subscriptions.

From that day on my own idiot naivety was given a sound alert.

No more trusting in the faith of man, by leaving my door unlocked.

I don't automatically open my door to strangers either, though given my rural location we rarely have any door to door types come knocking. I think by gate also helps turn back anyone wishing to try to sell or survey me. The gate, I think, says in it's own way: Strangers aren't welcome.

Do you keep your doors locked when home?

We live off the beaten path but when I walk into the house the door gets locked behind me. My wife isn't as good at it so I'm always checking the doors when she uses them.

Yep, if a door is closed, it is locked . . . just because. Gotta establish and maintain the habit.

This is true even when I'm outside doing yard work. If I happen to be "out back" it would be completely possible for someone to enter an unlocked door on the opposite side of the house without being noticed.

When do I keep mine locked? Only when I'm inside . . . . . . . or outside.
The only time mine are unlocked is when I'm going in and out for shopping
or doing work outside.

When I'm working outside, IF it is in front, the door is unlocked. If I am
working out in back, I take out the tools/equipment I need, then close and
lock the doors in front (equipment from the garage, etc.).

I trust everyone . . as far as I can throw the entire house with one finger.

Fox Mike,

Yeah, that's what I used to think, but sadly, not anymore.

As a kid of the 50's, no one locked their doors in my neighborhood even at night.

Now, yep, even if I working in the yard everything's locked, even the tailgate on my pickup.

Plus, I have it set up to lock all doors as soon I get in.

The world has changed since my childhood.

Only at night when in bed. The neighborhood I live in is the kind where people just open your door, holler "Anybody home?" and walk in if they get an answer.

Well Glad to see that I'm not the only one that leaves their doors, cars, airplanes, and hanger unlocked. Been doing it for 50 years. I don't like carrying keys and I never have to worry about locking myself out. To old to change now :D Well if you are a bad guy you might have a problem getting by me.

Many years ago when I was batching a old friend came over. He was in bad shape and had been worked over to where he was all black and blue. Looked BAD! He wanted to stay with me until he healed as he didn't want his brother to see him that he had been staying with. The brother was a big shot with Warner brother studio`s. Somehow his brother did track him down to my house. He came over and they talked a few minuets. Then he said follow me out to the car, Carl. I have some mail for you. It was a super hot day and my cheap rental didnt have AC. Carl was naked from the waist up and all bruised. There were two identical houses on the lot. A movie stuntman lived in the other. Soon I heard some hollering and swearing and Carl ran in the house with the neighbor chasing him! The neighbor had just a towel wrapped around his waist. Carl said he had his head down reading some mail and walked into the wrong house. The neighbor was "getting it on" on the living room couch with his wife or GF when Carl walked in! Never a dull moment in those days!

Hi,

Ale took the words right out of my mouth: if the door's closed, it's locked. House or vehicle. There's no such thing as a "good" neighborhood around here any more like in the days when I knew folks who couldn't even tell you where their house key was or when the last time a particular door was locked!

Yep..regular doors with deadbolts and heavy security doors with deadbolts..we have a "safe room" in the house which is our first line of defense should someone get in...and we are armed. We live not far from the Mexican Border and Tijuana and the trolley from the border inland goes very near our neighborhood...so the transients have a way in and out.

Can't carry off the premises here but usually if I'm in the garage or just around the yard I have a little old "fanny pack" that I wear around my waist..with a Smith 36 in it....never leave the property with it as that's a big time problem if you get caught...Ah, California.

Out of the truck, the doors are locked. If home the house is locked. Check every night before bed.
