That is hard for me to answer as it has changed through the years with my activity's. I dont need to camp anymore as our house is in the middle of good camping country. We trail ride on RZR a lot and I most often pack a 3" model 36 S&W .38 special. It`s light and handy. A couple years ago I hit a fawn with our RZR and had to put it out of its misery. I mostly just carry it for defense and keep a snake shot load on top. Have also used it to signal when riding with a group. Sometimes you come up on another trail and one would ride ahead a short distance to see if the trail peters out or not and if it`s good fire so the rest comes up. Have shot rattlers too.
Other times I carry a old 44 special Smith.

I carry a 4 5/8 single six or 4 5/8 44 special when in the pasture. I'm just not a 357 handgun fan.

I don't camp so have never thought about a "camp gun," but reading this thread, it sounds like my 3" Smith 66 .357 would serve me just fine if the need ever arose.

I've seen a couple of them. Don't care for the compensator in front of the front sight. Still a nice gun.
Mine doesn't have that. It's an earlier version from Ashland, circa 1985-86, 1 of 500.

I owned an F Comp several years ago. As it worked out I wound up with a pre-lock 3" barrel Model 60 357 and cash in a swap. I miss the 60 more than the F Comp.

I said earlier IF a revolver is the camp gun then it is the 4.2" SP101 357. It is easy to carry around camp, but if I was worried that wasn't enough I would opt for my 686 4" stoked with 180gr hard cast ammo....and if that's still not enough I would opt for my 5" 629.

As someone else noted it depends on geography, time of year, and if I am hunting. In and around Tn 3 inch barreled SP-101 stoked with 158 gr lswc over 13.5 grs of 2400, Charter Arms Bulldog 2.5 inch barrel .44 spl 240 gr lswc over 14.5 grs 2400. In country where large bears roam- Redhawk in .44 mag 310 gr WFN over 15 grs 2400. Choose yours depending on your activities, and risk assessment. Good luck!

I mix it up all the time. Sometimes it's a G19, but other times it's the Single 7 327 Federal, the OMBH in 357 mag, or my Harton Custom Montado in 45 Colt. This past June we had a family reunion and all went camping for 5 days and I packed the new to me S&W 69, the 5-shot 44 mag on the L-frame Smith, loaded with 240 grain cast lead hp's and 12.5 grains Blue Dot in 44 Special brass.

After running into a black bear at one of my favorite fishing holes the G19 stayed home and I started carrying a G21sf in 45 Super, then the 45 Colt took it's place and most likely the S&W 69 will come with me from here on out.

I used to pack this 5" 29-2 .44 mag but in later years if I want to pack a big caliber I pack the scuffed up .44 special also in 5" and save the 29. It`s slightly lighter too.

Either Super Blackhawk or Smith and Wesson model 69. Like many here, I prefer the 44 magnum.

I am a .44 special nut. I have accumulated seven of them. I also have a rare 5" s&w 29-2. Had other 44 mags.. I have found the .44 specials will do everything I need and maybe if your going Grizz hunting the mag might be a shade better. The specials are lighter guns to pack, all are accurate. Sure, you can load down a mag and you can also load the special to approach mag territory. The specials are just light enough with the pencil barrels along with the shorter cylinder to be called a "sweetheart" compared to the 29`s.
