I see that the weight is about the same and the African has sights were the Standard doesn't. I'm looking at the 338 Win Mag and would like to know what the differences are as the price of the African is considerably more. Is it worth the difference?

The African also has better wood, but the main difference is the sights. The African would hold its value better. I like the sights so I voted for the African.

Thanks for the reply. Better wood and sites could be worth the extra $200. 23" barrel would be better for maneuvering around as well. 24" to 26" seem standard for 338 Win Mag but most shots end up being less that 150 yards anyway.

Looks like the African in 338 Win Mag is winning with a landslide. I've been looking for one since my post but since they are so new, it might take a while to get out to retail outlets. Even gunbroker didn't have one yet.

My vote would be for an African Mark II in polished blue,
since I think the Mark II Hawkeye is plug ugly and a betrayal
by the new oligarchs at Ruger of their customer base, no labor
needed for polishing, just matte finish it so it rusts faster than
bare steel out in the rain, plus its UGLY, did I mention UGLY?

Yep, I'm not afraid to voice an opinion which after all is all it is.

In the "New Hawkeye" the .338 Standard and the African have the same wood. They also share the same Matte Blue. The African has the sights and the 23 inch barrel. The Standard has a 24 inch barrel/plain.

The biggest difference in the two in my opinion is the barrel "rate of twist"

Standard 1 in 10
African 1 in 12

The Standard would handle the heavier bullets better isn't that why you would really need a .338?

This may not be a huge difference but I would favor the Standard

1. no sights looks cleaner and I would use a low power scope
2. 24 inch barrel just as handy as a 23 inch?
3. Cheaper for me it is a hunting rifle
4. African looks like it should be in Africa and I aint going any time soon
