In the summer of 1957, I turned 14 and discovered girls (not that I could do much about what I discovered). That summer the song "Come Go With Me" by the Dell Vikings came out, and for much of my life would be the song I would name as my favorite. When I was already getting close to old age, I think the song "Lady in Red" by Chris Deburgh pushed "Come Go With Me" to the side.

I liked Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce. The best live version I ever heard was by a migrant farm worker from the South who played it on a National Resonator guitar. He had this gravelly voice and growled the lyrics. I wish I could have taped it. He changed the words a little bit but he was a "razor totin' bad muthafuppah" as he was described to me by another migrant.

I used to wake up early. I was maybe 4 years old.

I’d turn on the TV and watch the test pattern on one channel until they played Arlo Guthries City of New Orleans. Next they would play the national anthem, with a patriotic video, then as soon as it ended I’d switch to another channel were the anthem and a different video would just be starting. Then it was time to make AppleJacks and milk.

Life was simple, but awesome. The only thing I had to worry about was leaving enough milk for my Mom’s tea.

I still love City of New Orleans.

"Pistol Packin' Mama" was my favorite. Though I couldn't sing it around my Mama. The first line went:

"Drinkin' beer in a cabaret,
And was I havin' fun..."

Mama was a strict teetotaler! A non-dancing Methodist then became a Baptist. Her Dad had been a circuit riding Methodist preacher."

Other songs from my childhood:

"Praise the Lord And Pass the Ammunition"
"God Bless America" by Kate Smith
"Comin'in On A Wing and A Prayer"
"There's a Star Spangled Banner Wavin' Somewhere."

I wasn't hip, but we were patrotic!

Very young - Do Re Mi (Do, a deer…)
Early to late teen - Yellow Brick Road (Elton John), Funkytown, Do it Right (SOS band), The Moldau (Smetana)
For some reason, Straight Up by Paula Abdul is a favorite, but I was older when that came out.

Well, before I was born,, my Dad had built a 2 story business. The restaurant was downstairs,, and upstairs was a nightclub.
Every Saturday night,, live bands would be playing,, and people dancing. My Dad was also a manager/booking agent for many bands. As such,, I grew up with all kinds of music. My Dad used to say; "You were a baby in a crib,, downstairs,, on Sat. night, while bands played over your head."
So,, I've been around music, dancing & such all my life.
A favorite?
I had many growing up.

But one that always makes me smile with fond memories is "Sammi Smith, "Help me make through the night!"
It was a song played a lot at the dance hall I went to as a kid, (no drinking allowed, family place,) and it was my favorite "belly rubbing" dance song.

Beyond that,, many, many other songs were enjoyed. All kinds of venues too.
