Hello ruger lovers! I have a ruger mark III competition target model .22 semi auto pistol. I have been shooting with the open sights for about 2 years. I was thinking about scoping this little thing. I use it only for serious target shooting. I dont want to spend an arm and a leg for a scope. Lets say between 100-200. I was looking at the holo sights from bushnell. I am not sure what they are good for. Sombody please help. I will be shooting at things like spent shotgun shells @25 yards.

Have you considered a red dot? You can get a good bushnell trophy for just slightly over 100. It might be the better option because of weight. A scope on top of a mark III would be heavy. Just something to think about.

I too will say that I have a MKII Competition Target model. I also have a scope for it, and a red dot optic for it. I have found that the red dot is much more user friendly! There are some excellent low profile types out there that are excellent for them. I have an older Tasco Optima for mine. I love them!

A scope would add alot of extra weight. I never thought about that. A while back I had a bushnell red dot. I didnt like it. I guess I will have to go with a holographic site or maybe the hi-viz tru glow open site? Do you think that would help me out with my accuracy? The hi-viz tru glow sites are kinda cheap too.

look at the open tube red dots. I think they are called reflex sights, they are light weight, but I've read not as good in bright light as a tube red dot.

I just put a gently used Leupold 2x scope on my MKII competition model and sighted it in last weekend. I bought the scope (silver finish) used on Ebay for around $150. It's super-clear and bright.

I had a LOT of fun shooting tiny groups at 50 yards off a sandbag rest. The scope doesn't really add much weight to the gun, although it does make it bulkier, no doubt. The nice thing about the Ruger system is that I can remove the scope at any time and still use the iron sights.

I had a cheap Tasco 1x pistol scope on the gun before going to the Leupold 2x. They were both fun. I think I bought the 1x Tasco from Cabelas for less than $50 a few years ago.

Good luck,
Lou

I have leupolds on all my other rifles. I LOVE LEUPOLD SCOPES :D Here is a good question. Will I be able to make more precise shots using a leupold scope vs's shooting with open sites?

My 2X Weaver is clearer and has a better eye relief than my 2X Leupold, and it was under $100 on sale.

Well, as you would expect, adding a scope doesn't make the GUN any more accurate. However, I definitely could not get the same small groups at 50 yards, even from a sandbag rest, without the scope. And, the 2x magnification helps over the 1x.

That said, I'm sure that having a red dot sight would also improve your groups at any distance, all things being equal.

The reason is that either scope or dot seems to give a superior SIGHT PICTURE than the iron sights. Don't get me wrong, I love iron sights and will continue to use them, but my personal experience has told me that at longer ranges, having the reticle in a scope or a dot in the red dot sight helps get a consistent sight picture, which helps tremendously in getting consistent groups at those ranges.

I have several Red Dots and most have a 4-8 MOA dot and really aren't much more accurate than iron sights, they just have quicker target acquisition. A good scope will make it much easier to be very accurate.

I have decided on either a nikon red dot scope or a bushnell trophy pistol scope! I am leaning more towards the bushnell scope because it will magnify my target. What are your apinions on the bushnell scopes?

Is there any holster that anyone would recommend for a MKIII with a red dot or scope?

Not meaning any thread hijack, thought this would still be on s10's topic.

I had a Bushnell Trophy multi-reticle red dot that I really liked. I had two sizes of dots, plus a crosshair and one with a little dot in a big circle. It really worked nicely. The crosshair reticle was my favorite.

I once owned a bushnell trophy red dot. It was nice. Whats your apinion on the bushnell trophy hand gun scope?

From my research on scopes, fixed power are better than a variable scope. (less prone to drifting) But aside from that, the scope you're asking about lists for $243. Personally I think it too much for a Bushnell.

Kevin,

Thank you for your input! Optic planet is seling these bushnell scopes for 165.00 and free shipping,no tax. I have also been checking out burris. Burris makes a nice 2x20mm scope. Would be around 200.00. Is burris a good scope?

A good 2x pistol scope will do wonders for your shooting and will add very little weight over a red dot. Personally, I don't much care for red dots and don't believe them to do much over iron sights. Some actually less due to oversized dots. That's more than I'd pay for a Bushnell and would prefer the Weaver. Burris is also very good, approaching the quality of Leupold. Nikon would also be a good choice. I have an old Tasco ProClass 2x on my Buckmark Standard (only Tasco that never failed me!) and it's a terror out to 75yds on small game.

Thanks craig! Good looking buckmark you have there. I take it tasco doesnt make them anymore?

Thanks! No, they haven't made them in a while but you do often see them used. IMHO, it's about the only Tasco product worth seeking out, though you can probably find a good new scope for similar money. Not many are made with the big 30mm tube though. Those nice polished blue steel rings are also Tasco-issued rings that come with the scope. I'd look at Weaver and Nikon for a new one.
