What Mark II did I just buy?

I just won an auction on GunBroker for a Mark II Standard Model, fixed sights, 6" tapered barrel, stainless steel. The gun had not been identified by model or catalog number, but, from the appearance and features, I thought it was a KMK6/00183. After my successful bid, I looked up the serial number to see when it had been made, and was surprised when the result came back for a model 00151.

The gun looks exactly like what I was looking for, but the unexpected model number caught me off-guard. So, what did I just buy? Is it some kind of special run of the Mark II Standard?

Yeah, I've never seen that model number shown in any list I've been able to find either.

Since the case is included, that may provide the answer, but I'm a bit impatient.

Try getting in touch with Ruger that number seems to be a typo.

If you used the Ruger factory serial number look-up section,, that MIGHT be the problem. Sadly,, the factory info isn't always correct. That's why most of us collectors prefer the RENE Guide for the true details.

It was the online factory look-up section that I used. Sadly, I don't have access to the RENE guide.

You did good for the price! Enjoy it... If the bolt has tapered ears be careful because it is a 2 piece bolt and may break where it is welded causing the ears to fly off.

That looks like a great gun! I can’t help you at all with the model number, but it sure looks nice. Can you post some pictures when you get it?

I’ve got a similar model. Mine is the heavy taper. And the sights are different. But they are super accurate.

As far as the two piece bolt. I’ve got another Mark II with the two piece bolt, haven’t had any trouble at all. I can see how it might cause problems but it’s been a well shot gun without any issues.

Some of the 2 piece bolts break while others will last for thousands of rounds. My buddy Leon had the ears fly off of his KMK4 much to his great surprise. It happened while the Mark 2 was still in production so he ended up with the correct replacement bolt for it.

That's a great looking piece and great purchase. I have a late 80's similar model in blued and it seems at times more accurate than my much newer MK IV target.
Somehow the rear sight was replaced on mine with one from a target model before I got it. That made it shoot always high even with adjusted all the way down.
I put a low profile LPA rear sight on it and dialed it in at 25yrds. Became a serious tack driver. Enjoy!

That's exactly what I wanted, and thought I was buying, when I placed my bid. Thanks for checking the RENE guide for me.

As I said, it was the result that came back when I checked the serial number in the online lookup that confused me. When I have had a chance to inspect the gun at my FFL, I will post what information is shown on the case that comes with it.
