158 gr. LSWC over 5.0 gr. 231, Starline cases, WSP.

Dixie, Handloader Magazine (Oct 2007) got 1216 fps out of a 5" S&W N-frame Heavy Duty using a 155 gr. LSWC over 11 gr. of 2400. (Elmer Keith used 13.5 gr. of 2400! Yikes!) 11 gr. is close to the classic 38/44 load. I shoot this in my SS .357 Blackhawk and also my Smith 620 sometimes. Most of the time I shoot the load I first mentioned.

Four different loading manuals I looked at show this load to be well ABOVE MAX for 38 SPCL +P.

This was asking for 38 spcl loads not 357 Mag! :?

Just shot my first reloads using my Lee Anniversary Kit setup for .38 special.

The LCR is a beast to shoot factory or +P loads in, make no mistake about it. Your hand will hurt after 25+ rounds.

So, I loaded up some .38 special rounds using a 125 grain copper-plated bullet (from Rainier), using 3.2 grains of Hodgdon TiteGroup powder and Remington small pistol primers.

It made the LCR a *joy* to shoot. Light recoil (compared to 158 grain factory loads). Sooooo much fun to shoot this gun. Fairly accurate, too. YMMV.

Edit: Up next will be the same 125 grain bullet, but upping the TiteGroup powder to about 3.5 grains. Should be PERFECT for the LCR. IMHO.

I shoot 10 grs 2400 under a cast 158gr SWC in my K framed .38 specials. One of my Speer manuals listed it as max and it has served me well.

A 4.8 gr dash of Unique and a keith 173gr swc works too.

3.2gr. CLAYS under 145 gr Lee SWC cast from WW with a little tin added. WSP primer and Lee Facory Crimp die to apply consistent crimp. Very accurate load in various 38 & 357 guns.

Thanks,

I have started using 2.8 gr of Clays with a 158 gr LSWC. Mild load and very clean burning. Some guys don't like Clays but as long as you do not try to load it to maximum levels it works fine!
