Guy at work asked if anyone was interested in a .22 pistol.

Of course, I popped up and got first dibs.

It's a 2008, 22/45 and has a 5 1/2" bull barrel, and upgraded front sights with a white dot.

Box, two mag's, all the case goodies and the rail.

Went home for lunch and came back with $225.

Now, I guess I'm gonna start shooting local .22 matches with it since I already shoot a Colt Combat Commander 1911.

I've been reading up on them here, so bear with me if I ask noob questions about the MKIII's.

Welcome to the club! They are very addicting!

Do I get a special badge or patch for stripping and reassembling it within the first 12 hours of ownership? :D

Truth: I could not separate the frame from the barrel and my better judgment told me to stop and not whack it any harder with my plastic ball peen.

What's the trick for a first time barrel removal?

my bad:

How do I separate the barrel-reciever assembly from the frame?

Kind of like calling stocks "grips" on the 1911 forum, I guess.

bet I don't make that same mistake twice

doc,

Welcome to the forum.

There is no patch for successfully stripping, and reassembling any of the Ruger 22's. All you have to do is wait for the right phase of the moon, stand on your head between steps 4 & 5 and hold your mouth just right.

Nothing too it, or you could just follow the steps in the manual.

As far as removing the receiver from the frame, I think that most people just use a bigger hammer. I've not had that problem, but I understand that it gets better.

Now on the 1911, is the term "grip panel" acceptable?

Thanks, but I'm not enough of a 1911 veteran to accurately answer that question.

I've only owned five of them. I think you have to have a .45ACP tattoo and have owned a dozen 1911's to fully grasp proper 1911 grammar.

And the secret handshake, of course.

Now, where's my Binford hammer?

.... Over a sewer grate to show supreme confidence.

I did it propped up in bed watching the 10 o'clock news.

And the Binford hammer just did the trick.

Put it in my vise with nylon jaws and the second love tap separated the..uhh...barrel-receiver assembly from the frame.

Previous owner had probably put 100 rounds thru it and never cleaned it.

Of course, taking a new gun apart is what men do, right?

Your supposed to clean the 22/45?

If I had known that I would have kept my MkII.

I will give you one serious tip though, the front sites on the bull barrels shoot loose. It is a good idea to remove it, clean the screw, and the threads in the hole, then apply either loc tite, or fingernail polish to the screw and put it back together. Use the loc tite that you can undo, I forget the color.

I think you will like the 22/45.

Double Maduro,
I love your cigars, LOL. And, it's blue or green, same strength as blue, but you put it on after tightening the threads. I've heard of people using the green before threading anything up on firearms because it is thinner, but sets up to the same strength. Personally, I use red on everything and just twist a little harder to loosen. LOL

How do I separate the barrel-reciever assembly from the frame?

I wrapped a thick washcloth around the back of the slide ... grabbed the grip barrel up, and gave it a good thwack on the edge of a wooden stool.

First time for a full strip it takes a pretty darn good whack to get the thing off, so don't be afraid to smack it pretty good. Just wrap it in something so ya don't ding it up.
It breaks in after several tear downs though, and comes right off.

We really do need a special patch and certificate you know.

good deal... but shooting these 22 Rugers is a very dangerous hobby.

I wacked mine once and got it off... once was enough for me.
(sorry, could not help myself)

Thanks for the front sight tip.

My Taurus MilPro did the same thing.

Thought it was my old eyes and realized the front sight was pointing east/west.

I'll put a drop of the red stuff on it tomorrow. It's gonna be another BINFORD day!

Be thankful...I have to hit my Mark III 678 Target pretty hard several times every time I take it apart (though after maybe a dozen times it feels just a little easier. Remember, it just means you have a good tight-fitting pistol!
