What exactly is a 1911?

Help Support Ruger Forum:

I have been told my S&W is not a 1911 because of the extractor.
Yawn,,,,,,, still shoots 100%.

I always thought it odd that S&W could make the external snap over extractor work and Kimber couldn't. The JMB internal extractor has always worked but it must be "tuned" and the tunnel cleaned every 500 rounds to be reliable. The JMB design does not snap over the cartridge rim, the cartridge rim slides under the extractor hook during cycling. Too much tension on the extractor and the cartridge takes a "nose dive" on the feed ramp during feeding.
Kuhnhausen says between 0 and 25 inch pounds of tension.
