Great idea and I'll look into that!

I thought about that and brushed it off. I'm willing to pay not to send my wood back. I'll give Ruger/Marlin a call as new stocks aren't listed on their website. Here the wood:

Yeah, with wood that nice… no way would I chance it. Not just with Ruger but damage or loss in shipping.

Have them ship you a stock in a rifle box! Win-win!

Double box and I'd use additional layers of cardboard at each end of the box. And try to make the inner box the right length so the gun doesn't slide back and forth in it. Several times we've had rifles and shotguns come in at the shop with the muzzles poking through the end of the box. Some pretty badly damaged.

A dealer I know puts the long gun in the Plano case, well packed, and then uses filament tape to seal the case. I mean really seal the case. Strip ties on the four points made for that purpose. He's a volume seller and hasn't lost one yet. Always a first, but he maintains they know what it is anyway.

If you've got a long narrow box with the weight of a rifle in it, thieves are going to know what it is anyway. You just take your chances. That's what insurance is for. However, if you're shipping something that can't be replaced like a beautiful stock, as I said you're just taking your chances.

Just an update on shipping the rifle back to Ruger/Marlin.

I went to my LGS with my hard case and he had about 50 cardboard boxes that fit one I've had for years. It's a little loose, but I can stuff it with cut up cardboard.

I'm really hesitant to send the rifle back with the stock that came on it. I just called the Marlin division and, long story short, they're mailing me a new stock to ship it back with for $154 total. It's worth that much for me not to send my beautiful wood back.

That'll work! :)

Good deal.

Now what if the new stock they ship is equally as beautiful? 😆

I ordered the replacement stock from Ruger on Jan. 12 and it arrived today. I'll bet I'm the first one to order a new stock for a RM 1894 LOL It's actually pretty nice.

I'll get it mailed back on Tuesday.

That's another pretty piece of walnut! Nothing like your original though. Thanks for posting. I was wondering about that a couple days ago.

A few months ago, I was looking for a carton for moving purposes. It was for my Winchester Sporting Rifle which has an OAL of 44". I went to a Fed Ex and ended up buying a triangular box which was oversized and was going to let my son cut it down when he planned to take it. Recently I was at one of my LGS' which had a more suitable box and a lot closer to what I wanted. So, check out your LGS'. One never knows what they might have.

It's a pistol grip stock for a RM 336. I have an 1894 straight stock (see post 20). I can't believe I didn't catch it right away LOL I'll call Ruger/Marlin in a little bit.

Sooooooooo why do you need to send the rifle back with a stock. I'm sure Marlin/Ruger has a few if they need one to fix your rifle.
It will also fit in a smaller box. :)

Nope, Ruger said I had to send the entire rifle back in with the stock attached.

Got off the phone with Ruger/Marlin and she said Oops! She said she'd try to expedite a new stock so I don't have to wait so long. I also have a return label for the incorrect stock so I can mail it back along with the rifle at the same time to save me a trip to the FedEx terminal. 2 separate boxes.

Recently wrote about Fed Ex having boxes for shipping rifles. However, they do charge for the boxes. I have never shipped any rifles, but do save all the original boxes my rifles came in. Two years ago purchased a used Winchester Sporting Rifle that was 44" OAL. without a box. While at a LGS, I asked if they had any shipping boxes. I lucked out as they were about to cut down some boxes for recycling. I said, I would be happy to take two of them off their hands which they were happy to give me, saving them a little trouble. one of the boxes was perfect for my Winchester after I cut it down a bit. Never hurts to ask and one may get lucky in what you are looking for.
