The "magnetic" guys have it right. My kitchen cutlery is a quality stainless from Germany. The set hangs on a magnetic strip. Always thought all Ruger bolts to,be stainless. Jack

I'm no master of firearm manufacturers, but I have seen countless weapons plated in nickel.
I don't recall any issue with plating if the firearm was designed to be plated.

Ruger did the experiment in 1965 when a large batch of Super Single-Six cylinder frames came out of the bluing tanks a nice purple color. Around 100 of these were sent for complete nickel plating and it was found that they were not able to reassemble as easily....plating does add to parts tolerances, no???? That is what they found out. And that is why you never saw a regular production plated Ruger.
The whole process took more time than it was worth to Ruger.

There is also "martensitic" stainless steel. It, too is magnetic. Quite common in knife blades.

Hi,

Dunno what alloys their makers used, but I just checked a raft of knives from German, Swiss and several US makers--simple production grade folders. All are stainless, each is magnetic.
