TRIMMING CASES FROM MAG TO SPECIAL???

just wondering what the easiest way to do this is? i have a redding manual case trimmer and im just not that into cranking that thing that much.

anyhow winchester and starline say there brass is the same for .44 mag/.44spl but i cant find any .44 special anywhere so i guess its time to start trimming

It's a pita. If you trim .44M cases to .44S length, the sidewall thickness should be OK. The further you trim, the thicker the sidewall gets, of course.

If you have more than a box or so of cases, you may want to consider a power trimmer of one sort or another.

I looked into this and quickly gave up on the idea. I have pounds and pounds of .44 mag brass, but couldn't find Special to save my life.

There really is no good, economical way. You can buy a $250 attachment to your Dillon press that'll do it. If you happen to have a drill press I found a jig and cutter that will let you use that to trim brass, and it's about $35. There are various "file trim" dies, but I can't seriously see myself filing .10" off of 100+ cases; My time is worth more than that. You can also get a power trimmer, or a power attachment to an existing one, but you're still looking at $200+. Some trimmers can be hooked up to a hand drill, which might help, but still, that's a lot of brass prep.

I simply put a "watch" on Midway's stock, and within a week got a notice that they had some. Either that or go buy some .44 Special cowboy loads or "factory reloaded" ammo (Miwall, etc), and use the brass from that.

And you already have a cordless screwdriver or drill. Midway doesn't sell the Lee ball handle separately, so you'll have a spare cutter when you're done. You can order the ball handle separately from Lee if you're so inclined. This solution is far from elegant, but it is highly functional. And cheap!

Save your money, frustration etc & just get on Starlines site & place an order for brass in 44 spl. Then,, you'll have a proper headstamp,, and correct dimensioned brass to use in your spl!

maxpress, starline shows the russian in stock. They have a min. 500 rd.
I'v always got my backorder a week or two early from their backorder date.
I've had luck in the past with calling Dillon about brass. They sell it 100 count. If you only want 100 midway will send it when it comes in.

Back in the old days when I didn't have much access to supplies, I would cut back 357 mag cases after the mouth split. I wouldn't even think of that now even though I have plenty of time.
