Thoughts on “collectibles”

I’m sure most of y’all have never hear of these things called Funko Pop. They are some sort of soft plastic, vinyl I think actually, made in different Asian countries. Some in Vietnam or Tiawan I believe. I’m not sure if they are made in China or not.

Anyway, among the 13-14 year olds these things are all the rage. I’ve attached a picture to show you what I’m talking about.

And prices are all over the place, from $10 to up in the hundreds. More if they are “rare” and “collectible.” At one store I saw a set of four for $2,250. I’m not joking at all.

I know everyone wants to discover the next new antique. And I’m sure lots of people are making money on these things, but I don’t see them being sought after in 50 years.

But that does make me wonder what will be sought after in 50 or 75 years. In the year 2323 are people going to say, “wow, that 100 year old object is worth a fortune.” And what would they be talking about?

Picture of a Funko Pop.

The box is about 4inches wide and about 5 inches tall.

Back in the 1960s, it was “Troll Dolls”. Don’t forget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Thomas the Tank Engine. I don’t remember when it was “Beanie Babies”, but I remember it having happened.

There’s always some new kind of mass produced plastic crap for kids to try to get their parents to waste money on.

Doubt you will find anything from Tracy Lords (spelling) 😀

And yes you are correct, something to waste parents money on.

I was thinking of this topic because We were just inside a store, and some dad was buying his little princess 3 Funko Pops. And then he bought some other “collectible” that was $108. He was very nonchalant about the whole thing too.

Things are worth whatever someone that wants them is willing to pay...Some well healed folks pay millions of dollars for certain baseball cards and comic books!

I saw a set of about 30 or so of these Funko Pop's for sale on another Forum, for about $250.00 or so. I only paid attention to them because I know of someone who likes Star Wars stuff.

There’s a store in Dallas, they must have several thousand perhaps even 5 to 7 thousand different Funko pops for sale.

I used to be CFO of Pinnacle Brands/Donruss. Donruss was the original maker of baseball cards. I quickly determined that to have value, a "collectible" must be both (a) desirable and (b) scarce. Comments above don't suggest that scarcity is one of the Funko Pop attributes.
Yes, you are correct, they aren’t scarce at all. Quite the opposite. This is what I can’t figure out, why people buy them. The store in Dallas I mentioned has the “rare” models locked in glass cases.

I do have to admit buying a few of them. My daughter wanted some for her birthday, and I had to buy the Minions “Kung Foo Kevin” 👍. But I have no aspirations they will go up in value.
