Think I want to buy a "long" pistol next

Help Support Ruger Forum:

FWIW & YMMV, I initially didn't care much for AR pistols, because of the buffer tube/receiver extension sticking out the back. But you can get a cheek weld of sorts on the buffer tube (without stirring up any feds ;^), which makes them somewhat better for shooting offhand, versus shooting with a rest or bipod. Also on the plus side is the easy availability of parts, and multiple caliber options; on the minus side is the established fact that ownership of AR pistols is being actively restricted by gun banners.

Semi-auto pistols without the AR buffer tube can be a lot more compact, and IF you're shooting from a bench, you won't need a cheek weld. I owned a Kel-Tec PLR16 for a while, and it was compact, light-weight, and trouble-free; it was a lot of fun, and quite accurate shooting from a rest. (And just as a reminder, some shooting ranges do NOT allow firing from the hip - saw a range master intervene a couple months ago, when an AK pistol owner tried that.)

You might think about which caliber would be best for you, to narrow the field. The 5.7 ammo is currently a bit pricey, which is a concern for me but maybe not others. I really like 9mm ARs, but the PLR16 was a great plinker, also, and shot flatter & farther. And I've also owned (& parted with ;^) AR pistols in .300 Blackout & 7.62x39. Heck, .22 LR might even be an option!

As always IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc.
:)
Not sure on the .22 cal, but the 9mm is certainly in the running.

I have nothing against the Chargers and think they are fun. But I'm a bit more like you and fond of AR style.

This one was built off of a stripped PSA lower and barreled upper. Nothing wrong with PSA some folks poo poo them from some issues a long time ago. This thing is just for fun blasting steel plates. The Rise Armament trigger is very good for that with the quick reset. View attachment 66810View attachment 66811

And yes the brace is legal this is not a SBR it is a pistol.
Yeah, that's spot on what I'm leaning towards. 5.56?

TNW firearms makes one that can be chambered in everything from 9MM to 10mm and all you need for the caliber change is a different barrel and magazine...
I have both their rifle and pistol, here they are with my various barrels:

I really kinda like the idea of having the best of all caliber worlds in just one gun. That way I can shoot whatever mood strikes me.

When I posted earlier I had actually forgot about this one. Picked it up last fall and haven't shot it too much so my memory being what it is...
Put a blast can and a Vortex red/green dot on it for The Missus so that she might want to shoot it.

"I really kinda like the idea of having the best of all caliber worlds in just one gun."

I don't consider the 9mm to 10mm to be the best of all calibers. But let's step aside about that for a bit.

I own a Ruger PCC 9mm carbine. It has it's purpose. I see a lot of short barrelled guns like shown above,, in various calibers such as .223, .300 BLK-OUT, etc. And again,, I can see a purpose.

But I study a caliber & how efficient it is and where the optimum efficiency of that caliber when combined with barrel length. And you can see by my handle,, I have tried a lot of T/C Contenders in most of the calibers offered at one time or another. Many calibers in 10"-14" barrels there never reach their full potential in such short barrels. Many can be loaded in a manner to be quite efficient in a shorter barrel.

But calibers like the .223, or .300 BLK etc,, in a 10"-12" barrel,, (or shorter in many cases,) is just not very efficient. Yes,, you can do some stuff with them. But to get decent velocities,, you have to use hotter burning powders,, and the barrels eventually suffer from throat erosion.

The 9mm & the 10mm are fine in a shorter barrel,, and are proven to be quite nice. But the calibers themselves are not the best of all caliber worlds. How accurate are they at 100-200 yds? How much energy can they transfer at those distances?

My point to this posting is this;

If paper punching is all you do,, or maybe the intended use is close range self defense then the many options shown or discussed above will be just fine. But if you have a need for serious ranges,, then most of those fall short if you don't optimize the caliber's efficiency with a proper barrel length. In short; there is not a single caliber or firearm design that can do it all. Not a single one,, period that can be "The best of all caliber worlds!"

That's why we have options, and so many different calibers, loads & firearms!

Maybe we have progressed enough that the one item I like when we are discussing this thread is that both the short and long gun not only shoot the same ammo but if we are also discussing only semi-autos that they use the same magazines. Just seems practical to me.

Ruger did it twice with the PCs.
