When my granddaughter was going thru chemo in '14 a local Marine named Corey walked up to her and gave her a medallion from his time in Iraq. After we tracked him down he became like family to us. I wrote about it here 9 years ago to the day--6-23-14.

A few years later we were all out to eat on Mother's Day. My 2 year old grandson was choking. I never saw it happen because it was down the table on the other side. Corey instantly did the Heimlich maneuver and got him to pop out what was choking him.

We all love Corey, and Corey loved his girlfriend and their 7 and 4 year old kids. He was really overcoming what a lot of men don't.

My oldest daughter just called me crying with some terrible news. Yesterday, on his son's 4th birthday, Corey was driving and a tree fell on his truck. He passed away today.

She said she wants to believe all things happen for a reason. I said that some things simply happen, and there is no rhyme or reason.

Rest in Peace, Corey. You made an amazing difference in my family's lives. I am deeply saddened tonight...
So sorry to here, it often seems like the good ones leave us early. Prayers for you and both families.

Condolences to all who loved him. RIP Corey.

My wife's cousin's Marine son served in Gulf War 1.
His name coincidentally is Cory, and now serves as a police officer in the Dallas area. He is a fine man too.

I want to thank everyone for your prayers and kind comments.

The viewing at the funeral home was last night. Lots of folks there, country folks, proud people of little means. They were just wonderful, you know--salt of the earth people from a small southern town. I met his fiancée at the casket and gave my condolences with the appropriate one armed hug. With the adults in my family there wasn't a dry eye.

We all learned something new about my granddaughter, Kady, meeting Corey at McKay's that day 9 years ago when he gave her his medallion (linked to in the OP).

We were talking with his Mom in the hallway and she remembered us and the day Corey gave Kady his medallion. It seems Corey talked to his Mom about it after we tracked him down and made contact. There's more to the story than Kady simply being an inspiration to Corey. My daughter didn't hear it and Kady doesn't remember what was said.

Corey was standing there and Kady caught his eye. There was a young boy standing in line with Kady and her Aunt. Apparently the boy said something really ugly to Kady about her being bald. It infuriated Corey that the kid's Dad didn't say anything to the kid. Kady just looked at the boy and smiled. That's what inspired Corey.

I wish I could sit down and talk with him just one more time. He will be deeply missed  Rest in Peace, my friend...
