one of my medical school classmates, was long term army and a southern good old boy . he became a psychiatrist. he was assigned to 82nd airborne and did jumps with them [ i called him "Shrink from Above' ] he carried a ruger superblack hawk 44 magnum with him. he was very respected and popular with his comrades in arms. [ i was also an army doctor, but didnt do anything exotic like he did. ]

I flew with a Husky pilot that carried a Blackhawk.44 mag. No it wasn't a Super Blackhawk.

I didn't know at the time but later found that Ruger did indeed make their .44 mag as a Blackhawk.

I suppose there are those here who would know how many of those were made.

An intriguing photo. Staged, probably, but you can't fault his choice . . .

Having known and worked with USA Military pilots and aviators, it is because they can do whatever they want to do. Results bring liberties in the area of personal weapons. A USAF aviator told of a fighter pilot friend who carried a .22lr handgun and 100's rounds of ammo because it weighed the same as the .45 pistol and ammo that he was given to carry -- he figured more rounds of .22lr gave him more chance of survival should he be shot down. The OP's picture appears to be a Viet Nam era aircraft and those were the "wild, wild, west" days compared to now. Again, results earned liberties.

Veeman, there were NO "New Models" back when those pictures were taken ,"in country".............look carefully and you well 'see' the blued grip screw/escutcheon, and the black eagle medallion on the grip panel, as well as 3 screws in the cylinder frame..(y)

would love to get back to Utah and possibly look up PFC Dickerson, hell he'd be almost my age, and the last time I was there, at the NRA convention I rode on the elevator with one of the Malone boys, Karl or Moses and hell he was way bigger than 'HDOnly Bob', when we rode on the elevator at Harrisburg,PA...now THAT was a story....:oops:;)

About 1971-73 (some where in there), I saw a picture of 4 Security Police, in S.E. Asia, posing in a Jeep. Two were carrying Rugers. One was a Blackhawk & the other a Security six. I heard the Army & Marines had the GS32-N SEC SIX, but USAF had S&W mod 15s. Maybe we got a small amount or it was borrowed for the pic.

I good friend of mine was in Vietnam in about 1970. He was in a artillery unit. One day his Sergeant was showing several men his personal handgun, a 25 automatic of unknown brand. The gun discharged and hit my friend on the inside of his leg next to his family jewels. They patched him up and put him on a chopper to take him to a field hospital. When the chopper got to the field hospital it was very windy and the chopper was having trouble landing. A gust of wind turned the chopper a little sideways and my friend fell about 15 feet to the ground. Later on he was in a hospital at the Presidio in San Francisco and got to meet Governor Reagan. After this things just kept going bad in his life and he passed away 10 years in the hospital after going septic from some kind infection. I had not seen him in 33 years and it turns out he was living only 3 hours away all the time.

Wouldn't it have to be 1972 or after if it was a Security Six? A Gunny attached to the Marine Cadre that oversaw ASF commented on the Security Sixes carried by base security (this was 1985). He said the Marines issued them for embassy guards and MPs. I was shocked. That was early in my career and I thought everything would be 1911. Man did I see a ton of stuff being carried aside from the 1911 up until the early 90's.

I had Miss Penny looking for that article or anything with it. She hasn't found it yet.

My shooting buddy, and family cousin is retired USAF Colonel, B-52 pilot and later Nuclear Missileer. in the 70's and 80s. When I asked him about issued sidearms, it was a hodgepodge of 1911's, S&W Model 10, and later Beretta M9.
In the nuclear silos, on rotation duty, it was" whatever they had available in the arsenal".

So, 4 days on/ 2 off, whatever sidearm in the rack was issued. I find that odd, that sidearms were not standardized for training, but then, Minuteman III nukes were probably more the focus.

He preferred the S&W Model 10, and has one now, that was an early "custom Shop" revolver, coated in Birdsong Black -T and tuned action that is a maiden's kiss.

In certain units, the Command can grant permission to carry non-issue personal defense weapons. When they forced the pos M9 on us and they proved lacking, most of us went to the SW 66 or back to the 1911. When we got the Sigs, they were a much better choice, but the fairly ineffective 9mm hurt them. So we bought P220's out of our pocket. Stuck with them until the MK23 Mod 0 arrived. Except for the silly slide lock, they were ideal.

29860 flattop Blackhawks made in .44 Mag from 1956 to 1962, with a very few stragglers that shipped later.

I think a scant few Six Series double actions came out in 1970.
Yes, I have a scant few 1970 -Six DA Rugers.

This is one of them, an SDA-82 fixed sight Security Six in .38 Special with the early cast (as opposed to forged) barrel.

I was in RVN in '69; Armor TC, Central Highlands. Never saw or heard of anybody being questioned about what kind of gun/s they carried. Don't recall seeing anyone carrying a Blackhawk, but our 1st. Sgt. showed me his blue 4" Colt Trooper .38 Spcl. and ran into a guy with a nice commercial Browning Hi Power.

My Senior Drill Instructor in 1977 was a Vietnam vet who was wounded pretty bad. He liked to carry and show off a Ruger single action revolver in .30 Carbine than was in his hand when he got hit. One of the grips was damaged, similar to his right hand. He had the hand repaired, not the Ruger.
