The price of guns

Last week I posted about my friend from way back coming to Dallas. We only had time to visit one gun store. After we left we were talking about the prices at that store. Neither of us bought anything; and he commented their prices were high. He said he didn't see anything less than $400.

He's from Boise, is there much of a difference in prices around the country? I agree the prices in that store were high but not fantastically expensive if you wanted something. For example a blued Blackhawk.357 with box in like new condition for $650. Or Bearcats from 400 to 600 depending upon condition and accessories.

Anyway, I like the store and have bought more than a few guns from them so I won't post which store. My question is just in general, are prices radically different in different parts of the country? Or supply? Are there as many Ruger revolvers for sale here in DFW as in other parts of the country?

I stopped at a tiny gun store in Cloud Croft, New Mexico over spring break. They had two of those Desert Eagles. I have yet to see one for sale here in Dallas...

Anyway, just thinking....

No, prices run about the same throughout the country. There is one gun store here in Memphis where the prices are lower than other shops, this because of the volume of business they do. They sell more handguns than all the other gunshops in Memphis combined.

And there is a pawn shop where a bargain can be had at times depending on what they pay out for the gun.

Watch GunBroker and see what those guns usually sell for to get some idea of going prices.

Hey! Thanks. So my next question is... are you loyal to a specific gun store or do you cave in and buy any given gun at the cheapest price?

For example Bob Wright says there is one store in town with noticeably cheaper prices because of the volume they sell.... do you buy guns from them though?

Just curious, not trying to start an argument...

YMMV, but if I've learned nothing else over the past 50-odd years, it's that if run across a hard-to-find gun, AND I like/want, that I'm better off just paying whatever the price is (minus a little friendly haggling ;) ), ILO "looking" for 20 or more years before I can find another like it. (BT, DT - NTS :( )

I haven't seen a new 357 Blackhawk over about $520 here in ND. $650 would be super high.

Super high indeed. This example is cheaper than the one I bought a few years ago.

After a bit of seeing prices drop a bit, now they seam to be climbing a bit. I don't know about different parts of the country.

Purchasing on Gunbroker, you should expect to pay a premium.......but you have such a greater selection. Also, must figure shipping in the overall cost of the gun. $25 to $45 to ship to you, and unless you are real friendly with a local shop, $25 to $45 for them to receive. Of course this applies to our own classifieds as well. If you figure max both ways, you are paying an extra $90 for the gun. So just as any auction, figure shipping as part of the cost.

We used to have a Gander Mountain store here. They sell the very BEST guns, because their prices were the highest around! Seriously, in this area several gun stores have gone out of business, both smaller Mom and Pop type stores, and big box stores with gun departments like Gander Mountain and MC Sports. The few remaining small stores have prices that are nothing to get excited about, but I have bought guns at them in recent years despite the reality that I probably could have paid less somewhere else, but I don't want to see those stores go out of business. For me, buying a new gun is not an everyday event, so if I pay $500 for a gun that I might have searched for a bit and paid $465, it is not a big deal.

I'm just guessing, but it seems logical to me that because we now have 'on-line' auction houses like Gunbroker, I think that prices will gravitate to higher levels in a consistent comparison across the country. In making the rounds of large and small gun shops I invariably see that there is a laptop or two within reach of the sales personnel; and their used stuff is priced in sync with the internet. In the 'old days' they used to pull out a 5 year old edition of Blue Book when BUYING and a current edition when selling... :))

Well prices must be regional. I just got home from another gun store and their prices were very close to the other store. They had a Match Champion GP100 for close to $800. They actually had s lot of Ruger revolvers and some Mark pistols....nothing less than $450.

NIB prices from dealers are pretty close across regions from what I have seen over the years but you can get breaks from shops that have lower overhead or from outfits in cash flow jams.

Used gun prices vary more widely by region depending more on regional market variations -- like relative wealth, level of demand, resilience to economic stresses; supplies in local gun stores etc.. Inet prices and gun show asking prices on used guns rarely are met quickly unless the seller is low-balling his item.

I am amazed at guys who swear they still get used Ruger #1s for $150-200 lower than the prices I get locally for mine. But then the Wash DC area is awash in tax money they take from the rest of the country and thus near recession proof.

I agree, I could buy a brand new 357 Blackhawk out here in parts of Idaho for $525 out the door.. $650 is extremely high out here.. It wouldn't sell for that in these parts..

Brand new GP100 6" Stainless Steel sells for $525-550 out the door..

Some stores might be a little higher, but nothing to that extreme..

I live in Oregon and come November only single shot guns will be allowed here wait till after Nov and come on to Oregon and buy our guns for 2 cents on the dollar, thanks to our Democrat governor and the democrat voters.
