We've all bumped into this on various forums. Here's the debunk.

The Myth of the “One Perfect Gun”

A witty, practical takedown of the idea that one firearm can do every job—because life refuses to be that convenient.

There is a very specific moment when a gun conversation goes off the rails.

It usually starts with someone leaning back, crossing their arms, and saying: “If you could only have one gun…”

The “one perfect gun” question is not a serious question. It’s a thought experiment designed to kill nuance and replace it with a hot take.

Great link, extremely well explained. Thanks for posting it! Of course some might add " The perfect gun is the one in my hand when I need a gun most". The reply is usually something like "What if you are holding a .22 short mini- revolver and being charged by a grizzly? Then it goes around again. :ROFLMAO:. Yup, great and solid article.

If we want to take the "thought experiment" to the "perfect gun for each role" level (where it belongs), then I would argue that my perfect gun would be very different from the next guy, and it still comes down to a personal opinion. Even that has it's pitfalls though, since there are nuances for each role that would change the gun, as an example.....

Home defense:
  • how many perps?
  • how close (inside, or just trying to break in)?
Hunting:
  • quarry size?
  • expected range and conditions?
  • laws?
I have ~30 "perfect guns" for ~30 different scenarios. I also have ~10 guns that are in the top 5 for multiple roles, so would be the "perfect gun", in multiple roles... if I didn't go out to buy the "best" one.
