At the East Coast Gathering, someone was talking about the grocery stores carrying Karo Pancake Syrup, how it’s the greatest thing on pancakes.

I’ll let him say who it was telling me this if he wants. Now it’s good stuff, don’t misunderstand me, but it isn’t my favorite.

I don’t remember what pancake syrup I grew up eating. I’ll have to ask my parents; well, if they even remember.

I do know we went to Canada a lot, and we would buy these tubs of Canadian jam with real fruit. I don’t know the brand, but they were plastic containers. We would eat pancakes with peanut butter and this Canadian jam.

I guess my point is, we like the foods we grew up eating. I can’t eat eggs without ketchup.

My wife loves feta cheese and tomato sandwiches. They are ok to me, but she grew up eating them. She can’t stand Miracle Whip Mayonnaise. She just doesn’t know it’s the very best mayo.

We don’t eat many pancakes these days, but I still love them with peanut butter and either jelly or REAL maple syrup.

Anyone else still eat the same thing they grew up eating? I was just thinking of this as I drove my daughter to school this morning.

The Karo Pancake Syrup in question.

As you can see, I’ve tried it. It’s thicker than really maple syrup, and not as sweet, but it isn’t Mrs. Buttersworth. It’s got a different taste than other “maple” syrups.

Like I said, it’s good, just not my favorite.

Weenies and sauerkraut was my dad’s go-to when mom was out of town. He’d cook them together and those hot dogs would dye the kraut pink. Good stuff.

He’d also make fried egg sandwiches. Neither my sister or I much cared for those.

Actually, the Karo syrup that Ron likes is the "Light" color,, and it's not advertised as a pancake syrup. Karo has a "Dark" & a "Light,, AND the one you pictured.

But foods we grew up enjoying.
That's a hard one for me,, as I like all kinds of food. As a kid,, I was a bit of a picky eater,, but I grew out of that. Plus,, I was raised in a restaurant,, so I had a pretty good selection all the time. So I have a LOT of "favorite foods!"

I didn't know there were different kinds of the Karo syrup. I got this at the Giant grocery store, on my way home. It was just outside of Ashville down the mountain from the Continental Divide. (By the way, they've removed the sign for that on one side of the road.)

But I hear ya, during college, I worked in restaurants for a few years. I think I ate every meal in a restaurant for about 3 years in a row.

Arfmel: Have you ever had sauerkraut on Canadian bacon pizza? It's really, really good.

Favorite foods as I grew up:

Pancakes with red Karo syrup. I think it was corn syrup. With smoked sausage or Tennessee Pride hot sausage.

Bacon, fried crisp, with eggs and buttered toast.

Biscuits with butter and sorghum molasses. (Of late we are told it is sorghum syrup. But Dad alas drove up to a curb market in Brownsville, Tennessee and bought a couple of buckets of "Sorghum molasses" from Benton County, Tennessee, up on the Tennessee river.

Mom's fried okra has yet to be equaled.

Fried rabbit, I loved the hind leg.

Roast beef with potatoes and carrots.

And, Mom's home made rolls with butter.

Just a few of the items on or menu.

Oh, a friend of ours owned a bakery, and made the best Karo pecan pies. They were sort of canoe shaped with a cavity in the middle, and this filled with vanilla ice cream!

Oh man, you guys are making me hungry.

Bob, my wife just went back home to see her folks. It was her dad’s 70th birthday. She cooked them some sort of squash pie and the main course was rabbit.

I’ve tried rabbit, but just can’t get into eating it. I start thinking about how cute and fluffy they are. I’d love to have one of those Norwegian Flemish giants as a pet.

My Mom made "Spanish rice" basically fried hamburger and onions, mixed with rice and Campbell's tomato soup baked together. That is my #1 comfort food.

The occasional Braunshweiger sandwich reminds me of Mom too.

Regarding Karo syrup, never saw the pancake version, but I use the clear and dark when making caramel corn. It just corn syrup, not the high fructose stuff.

When we ran out of home made Maple syrup we used dark Karo or molasses on our pancakes, biscuits & cornbread. A bottle of commercial Maple pancake syrup
was a rare sight in our household. We also made PB & J pancake sandwich's and still do! At Xmas grandma used Karo when she made popcorn-balls.

I don't know what was in my Mom's "Spanish rice" but I know I absolutely hated it. Figgered out years later that what I was hating was the green pepper in it. I can't stand green pepper in any form. If you put green pepper in any food, you've basically ruined it as far as I'm concerned.

That hideous Spanish rice was the only kind of rice my Mom ever made. I didn't discover until I went in the Air Force that rice is pretty good all by itself--or with gravy, or beans, or chili, or spaghetti sauce, or....just about anything as long as it's not green peppers or mushrooms.

I didn't know there was any kind of mustard but yellow French's until I left home. I can't stand that stuff to this day. Will eat almost any kind of brown mustard but will not eat yellow French's.

Same goes for Velveeta cheese. Disgusting. I'll eat all the Swiss and cheddar cheese I can get, but no more Velveeta for me, ever.

All our vegetables came in frozen Birdseye packages. I'd eat 'em, but I never liked 'em. The Birdseye lima beans were big, green on the outside and white on the inside. Didn't find out till much later that the little lima beans that are green on the inside are darn close to good. Still not a fan of vegetables, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be those little green-on-green limas.

Oh, and the syrup of choice in our house was Log Cabin. I liked it, and my Dad many times accused me of using enough of it "to float a battleship." Still like it, and Mrs. Butterworth and Aunt Jemimah are good too.

King syrup (never cared for Karo) and on very rare occasions Vermont Maid Maple syrup (couldn't afford it), mac and cheese (war years.. cheap and filling), mayonnaise sandwiches, spaghetti and sauce (no meat), peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (lots of them).
