Tell Ruger you want a bolt action in 45-70 Govt

Help Support Ruger Forum:

Once upon a time Siamese Mausers were brought into the country with a bolt head large enough to accommodate the 45-70 case head. Most of them were converted to 45-70 custom rifles. There are several rifles on Gun Broker for around $500 to use as a basis to build. The caliber is 8x56R.

8x50R or 8x52R. 8x56R is the Austrian/Hungarian straight-pull Mannlichers, which might also work for a custom .45-70 gun. Magazine feeding might be rough on those though, I know the Mannlichers won't feed an empty case, where the Siamese Mausers will.

.303 Enfield conversions look to make a significant feeding capacity sacrifice, makes sense given the smaller rim/cartridge base. The 8mm rimmed cartridges derived from the original 8mm Austrian can all be formed from the .45-70 case head.

ETA: wouldn't be surprised if Berthiers in 8mm Lebel would work for the conversion as well. Both the 8mm Lebel and the 8mm Austrian are true first generation European smokeless cartridges developed by necking down the previous 11mm rimmed black powder cartridges.

I seem to recall kropatcheks being advertised for sale as modified for 45-70, or already converted, and likewise some mention of doing the winchester variant.

Out of idle curiosity, went and check some dimensions on samples I have around.

-8x50R Lebel bolt head fits .45-70 without modification, magazine would need relieved and probably lose a round capacity in the enbloc clips.

-8x50R/8x56R Austrian is a no-go as a magazine loader, multiple rounds do no fit in Mannlicher clips. Full capacity possible in 1886 11mm Austrian Mannlicher clips, not a great locking system for full power loads.

-8×50R/8x52R Siamese requires minor relieving of bolt face and possible minor modification of feed.

Berthier rifles in salvage condition are probably more available than Siamese Mausers at this point as a platform for conversion.

I don't see any major manufacturer taking on this task. Bolt-action feed systems for rimmed cartridges are an arcane and outdated technology with basically no application to other cartridges. Everything these days is built on .223 Remington, 8mm Mauser, and belted magnum case head dimensions.

I also like the idea of a 450 M in a bolt gun but brass is scarcer than hens teeth & can't be made from other belted mag brass.
If brass became available again it could be a great prospect. E.R. Shaw chambers for it.

4570 is some what common deer hunting caliber. I never knew anyone dressing up for cowboy shooting. Before I bought lever I was looking for bolts. Just some odd old stuff converter. It is something I would think about. Though I already got the lever. But if they did it price level of American, I would think about it. Not at anything higher, for me.

Add on top of that a strong action, even more interesting. But I like bolt at marlin levels would be interesting.
