Those puffballs actually turn out quite good. It is rare to stumble across them in that state here in TN. I havwe cut them in squares and pan fried them in olive oil before. Very delicate taste...not worth hunting like morels, but good eats to stumble upon while squirrel hunting.
It is still to warm to do much squirreling here...everyone waits till first frost to get rid of those nasty skin parasites as they have been pretty bad the last couple of years.
