I'm thinking about picking up a used 7.5" Superblackhawk. I want to cut the barrel down and re-attach a new front sight...and possible a new rear also.
1- Any suggestions on brand, type, etc?

2- Is the grip different from a 5.5" and 4.6", if so how? I plan on getting new grips also.

Thanks for the help. Speed...

Welcome to the Forum!
As for sights,, the Bowen's are quite good.
As for the grips,, I'm not sure I understand your question. The 7-1/2" Supers have the squared backed trigger area of the grip frame,, and some of the shorter Supers have the rounded trigger area. Since I don't have any of those to compare the stocks on,, I can't help. But the 7-1/2" supers do take a longer set of stocks than the Blackhawks.

We really like the Bowen Target rear sight here at my house...

The factory SBH you see with a round trigger guard will have a XR3-RED grip frame unless it is a Hunter in which case it is a SBH grip frame with a rounded trigger guard...

So far as barrels my favorite custom SBHs are 5.5...

Grips opens up another bottomless pit. You can go as plain or a fancy as your budget can stand... Dall sheep horn and ivory can easily match the cost of your base gun

thanks for the welcome. i'v read this forum for a while...very interesting with awesome people and awesome pictures. i'v been into firearms for a long time and have shot many rounds. i'm very particular when it comes to handguns, especially .40+ revolvers and .45 autos. when i found this gun, i immediately foll in love with the trigger and overall condition of the gun, i just want the project to turn out perfect. in doing so, i'v read A LOT of posts, comments, etc. this is why i'v been led to believe the grips are different on the shorter barreled SBH.

once again, thanks all! speed...

I did exactly what you are describing.

Bowen sights front and rear. I shaped the front sight myself.

Gun started out as a prewarning new model super I acquired from a fellow forum member.

Other upgrades are a steel ejector rod housing and wolf trigger spring.

A local gunsmith did the work including a bead blast finish then bluing.

Here it is before refinishing with standard rear sight.

Lots of wonderful choices out there... The customs are cool but can be deep money pits... There are off the shelf options out there that with a little TLC can be all you need at a HUGE savings... My first pic is my two 5.5 inch OM SBH Customs... Each gun is about $700 in work without the custom grips... The second pic is my consecutive serial number 5.5 inch NM SBHs... They have XR3-RED grip frames. There are factory 5.5 bisleys out there too...

1. Short barrels need taller front sights. Bowen makes one. Ruger .45 cal., 4-5/8" Blackhawk front sights are quite tall, as well. I have Millett rears on a couple shooters and am very pleased.

2. The 7-1/2" and 10-1/2" Super Blackhawks (not Hunter versions) are fitted with the larger, steel, square backed trigger guard grip frames. The 4-5/8" and 5-1/2" barreled Super Blackhawks are fitted with steel versions of the standard Blackhawk/Single-Six grip frames.

Let me muddy the waters for you. On occasion, Ruger has put a lot of desirable characteristics in one revolver straight from the factory. Standard issue with "Custom" features. If the particular revolver strikes your fancy, then you have a "Custom" at standard prices. Two or three recent issues come to mind:

1 - The Ruger 50th Anniversary Flattops in both .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum ( I got the .44 Magnum).

2 - A particular favorite of mine is the .44 Lipsey Special (I bought the 5½" as that is my preferred barrel length - it is everything and MORE than I thought it would be).

3 - A "sleeper" for me is the Ruger SS Bisley .45 Colt/.45 ACP Convertible. A couple of buddies pretty much dragged me kicking and screaming to this purchase. However, after I reamed both cylinders, did a trigger job and modified the pawl to a free spin pawl I have a near WONDERFUL and unusual handgun - it shoots extremely well as do the two above. I have re-discovered the great .45 Colt in a handgun that allow me to reach it's real potential and the .45 ACP cylinder has many advantages I won't go into here (shoots extremely well and makes use of the thousands of empties that I normally keep on hand as well as the 200 gr SWC's that I cast). Here's a picture of this one with the .45 ACP cylinder:
