it started as a stiff loading gate problem with my single six, I replaced the gate spring, now the gate opens and closes ok for about ten reloads/times then it won't open. The gun has to be taken apart and put back together each time this happen...I can't see any damaged parts...any suggestions?

Is the gate spring jamming up at the loading gate?

There can be a clearance issue underneath the spring, where it may touch the grip frame. I've seen where the Factory has made a "cut" to give the
spring some working room.

cccan,

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like something is moving out of place as you shoot it. Since it works fine for a while then binds up you need to eyeball everything as you take it apart, paying close attention to the loading gate and it's springs location.
Since it does this consistently, maybe make some reference marks the next time you assemble it and check them after it starts hanging up.

If nothing shows up, a trip back to Ruger might be in order.

I have the same problem on my NM. I noticed on my friend's OM that all the loading gate does is open and the hammer at half-cock relases the cylinder. On the NM the gate opens and also releases the cylinder. Mine is an 80s model I got used and has gotten stiffer and stiffer despite cleaning and lubing. I haven't dis-assembled yet...

cccan, My first question to you is: Did you put the "right" gate spring in your Single-Six? They look similar (Blackhawk/Single-Six) but are dimentioned differently. That "could" be your problem. If it is the right spring then it is moving in it's slot under recoil and the "sharp tip" end is riding over the gate stud and locking into the recess to make it difficult to open. You need to "round over" slightly the sharp tip so it acts more like a "cam" than a "lock". This should cure your problem. Also be aware that the "other" end of the spring (the closed rounded end) can wear the socket that it sets in oversized and allow the spring to move more than it should under recoil. Just a few things to look at!..........................Dick
