My .44 Mag Vaquero, built in 2024, has a small step in the mouth of every chamber. Any idea why Ruger would do this? There's got to be a reason, since it's an extra machining step, and that stuff costs money.

I never noticed it before. I went and looked at my SBH. It has the same chamfering just not as deep. I would assume it was done to smooth out any sharp machining left over from manufacturing.
My SBH is over 40 years old with no issues from chamfering.
You have a winner handgun and caliber.
Shoot and enjoy

I'm curious, since none of my other revolvers have this, whether Ruger or other brands. I've sent a note to Ruger so we'll see what they think.

That looks really odd to me. It doesn't look chamfered but counter bored and it's on the FACE of the cylinder not the breach side. There is no reason for a chamfer to be there as it is where the bullet exits the cylinder.
I checked all my Blackhawks and Vaqueros that I have access to and none of any caliber have anything on their cylinder faces like that.
