So I've been meaning to post this, but I've been lazy about getting around to taking pics to illustrate my thoughts. I'm sure this is going to come through clear as mud, but I'll give it a valiant effort anyway.

The SR9C mag base plates are much thicker than the SR9s as you can see from the below pictures. They also extend up into the magazine a little bit taking up room for capacity. The new ones are kind of nice because the spring doesn't come out at you when the base plate is removed, but that's not that big of a deal. I guess what I'm getting at is that it seems that if a floor plate like the full-size was used on the SR9c mag that maybe Ruger could have squeezed another round into it. This pistol is very similar in size to the G26, and if one more round could be stuffed into the flush fit that would put it a round ahead of the G26, which would be a huge plus for this pistol.

I guess my question is why did they change it? and Do you guys/gals think they could have squeezed another round in it if the mag was designed like the full-size mags. Surely they didn't say "to heck with another round... this way we only have to make one magazine" as in not a limited mag for those 10 rounder states??

Any comments welcome.

If you can't tell and/or don't own the SR9, the full-size SR9 base plate (left) slides onto the outside of magazine whereas the SR9c base plate slides into the magazine. I hope this makes sense to everyone.

I also noticed the much thicker base when I removed it to put the one with the finger rest on.............I think you guessed it when you mentioned the 10 round limitations in some locals............They can also state a smaller overall height in the specs & simply include a full sized mag in some areas & another 10 rounder in restricted areas. I think they could have taken the finger rest base & upped the capacity to 12 very easily......We will have to wait for the aftermarket! .......TG

Looks like the little groove on the side is a tad wider top to bottom which might make for a little better grasp on the bottom of the mag during removal. Just a thought though. By the looks of the photo it does appear that they gave up a round or two and as stated Im sure the aftermarket will make a +1 or 2 extension. It would be cool to have a hollowed out base plate and have 12 or 13+1.

For that you might need a new spring. Since the 9c model's spring only extends to the end of the mag, the little 3/8" inch or so that pushes inside gives it a little extra oomph to cycle the last rounds. If you shaved the base down, you could run into issues where the last round or 2 won't feed properly.

@DA_TriggR4Ruger, I think the SR9c comes with an optional finger extension mag plate for the 10 round mag.

I'm surprised at this lack of attention by the industry to this. It would sell like hotcakes -as would a 22 conversion kit.

I'm thinking of taking a 17 round mag and trimming it down to remove precisely 2 round capacity (I live in NJ where the limit is 15), I wonder if this is easily done? Perhaps if I reshaped (bent) the cut off bottom of the mag to fit the original baseplate, I'd be onto something. Maybe even the grip adapter sleeve would work with a little shortening. We'll see.

Maybe you could make some kind of plug like they have for shotguns that would fit into the magazine and then you would not need to modify the magazine at all.

The plugs are for hunting regulations, not home/personal defense. The chance for people in restricted states carrying >10 rounds illegally are too high. Even with steep fines, hunters will still hunt with no plugs in their shotguns.

Ruger only uses the 10 round mag because it's body is the same used with the full SR9, they can use the same spring, spring plate, body and only need to manufacture a new base to fit the 9c. Not to forget the fact that it makes the magazine legal in all 50 states.

I'd rather see Ruger produce a 15 round option so states with that limit could use the max. With the 9c though, carrying a full sized mag all day defeats the purpose of using the compact footprint of the 9c IMHO.
