new member here - lots of great info so far. I have a brand new SR9, about 60 rounds through it, and would like to remove the striker to clean it and maybe remove the mag disconnect. It looks pretty greasy and gritty. I've followed the videos here and at Ruger.com, and have the striker as far forward as they say, with the mag disconnect and the striker blocker button depressed, but the striker cover won't come out when I depress the cover release button. It looks like the striker is still "protruding" into the cover and not letting it slide out. Any suggestions, or has anyone seen this before?

I had the same problem when I removed my mag DC. You have to compress the spring at the very rear of the striker while holding down the two "blocker" buttons. The cover will slide out when that spring is compressed.

It took both hands plus two hands from the spousal unit to get the silly thing out.
I suspect there has been some change since the sticky was posted.
You're gonna love your SR9 and this forum! There's a ton of great info here.

Once you press the mag DC and the striker block depressed you have to push the striker tab toward the muzzle end. Did u do that?

Yeah, I really think I've got it as far forward as it can go - I can see the tip of the striker sticking out into the breach plate. It looks to me like the "spring retainer" is attached, or stuck to the striker cover, 'cause when I do get it to move a little, it looks like the striker is wanting to move with it. Maybe I'm just not applying enough pressure, but I really don't want to break something. The videos look like it just falls right out once the release button is pushed in.

Your spring cup might be cracked in which case it would still be seated in the cover.

If you do break it worst case is you spend a week without it while it's at Ruger getting a new Striker assembly installed, or they ship a new one to you.

But as per above advice, if your pushing the striker forward enough to see the tip sticking out of the breech, and if you shine a light at the rear of the slide, you should find there is a decent gap when it's all the way forward.

Sorry for the cell phone pics, but my camera battery was really low....least they aren't too bad I don't think.

Also if the Mag DC is still in place, make sure your pressing both the DC and the Striker Blocker in simultaneously while pushing the striker forward.

Hope this helps some,
Josh

This reminds me, on my training gun, I broke the backing plate off the end plate while trying to get it off. Not sure how I did it as I have had it off and the striker out several times but part of it is stays behind. I need to order a new end plate I guess. Should've took soem pics while I had it apart. Still works though. I think the striker may not have been as far back this time as it needs to be and the piece was all ready cracked or broke somehow.

Just email ruger, they'll take care of you.

You guys were so right. I just got the striker out, and sure enough, the spring cup has a big crack right down the side. I assume that's why it was "stuck" on the backing plate instead of sliding forward with the striker itself. I guess now I'll test Ruger's customer service.

Anybody have advice on warranty work, etc?? I'll probably try to call them first thing in the morning with receipt, etc. This gun is only a couple weeks old. I sure do like this gun - don't want to become one of the "SR9 nay-sayers"

Just call the Prescott facility sometime and explain, can't remember if the striker assembly has to be hand fitted or not. If not they may just ship a replacement.

It wasn't a hand fit part when they sent me a striker assembly replacement. However, they may want the OP to send his gun in if he can't remove the striker himself.

Just email them and they should send you a new striker assy. With it will be a return envelope for the old one. I had a broken spring cup also.

So who still thinks a cut spring has anything to do with spring cups breaking?

Just got off the phone with Ruger - of course, they want the gun back to determine if there's an underlying reason for the striker cup breaking. They aren't even willilng to sell me just a new spring cup. I think I'll wait til after Christmas to ship it. I'll keep you updated on the outcome.

I guess I'll just be shootin' my KNR4 only for a while! Not that that's a bad life either.

Just wait to ship it after the Holidays, also make sure that when your ready to ask them for a prepaid label. Ruger normally does this upon request and I can't recall anyone being told no.

Oh wow, I didn't have to do any of that...
