SR9 Owners: Did your gun need a "break-in" period?

In my other thread I made note of the problems I am having with the gun failing to return to battery and jamming on the last round of every magazine load after 300+ rounds fired.

My questions for you:

When your gun was new did you have consistent malfunctions that eventually went away on their own?

Approximately how many rounds fired did it take for the malfunctions to go away?

What kind of malfunctions were you having?

:?:

mine ran fine 1000 rds through it now. Question what type of ammo are you using?

100 rds. Winchester White Box 115gr
50 rds. 115gr cheapo ammo bought at the range
166 rds. Remington ShurShot 115gr

I've had return to battery failures with all of them and jamming the last round of every mag. with the remington.

only FTF was my fault on seating mag. Look to see if rim of cartage is catching on edge of mag other then that shoot it some more and try some better ammo. mine has run with everything rem Golden saber ww white box hornady even wolf . try a little heaver like 124 gr. You'll find the right stuff and really start to like that gun. Yes watch for the peening issue

Neither of mine have required any kind of break in period. Took em home, cleaned and lubed, went to the range, fired away, cleaned and lubed, repeat.

I've ran about every type, brand and build of ammo I can find including some crappy brown bear and it all goes bang and functions as it should. Well, except the occassional brown bear that had to be run through twice. I stopped shooting that crap, it ain't that much cheaper than the good stuff. So far, 2300+ in one and 400 or so in the other.

About the worse issue I've had is trying to load blazer brass, they seem a bit long and get caught up trying to load the mag's. Other than that, no break in and no issues.

How's your grip? What kind of lub are you using? Are the mag's ok (not damaged)?

No break in here. I shot some WWB and had weak ejections and a fail to fire with a range reload that fired the second time. Nice dent in the primer on that one too. Mine's been 101% from day one. 124 grain bullets eject fine and the one fail to fire reload was a fluke.

Hi Turbo,

I've been working on my grip and I think it's solid now. I could chalk up a couple of the early failures to limpwristing but not failing to fully chamber the last round out of each mag (with both mags).

I am using Break Free CLP to lube and both mags look fine.

Your out of box experience is definitely what I was expecting/hoping for as far as feeling confident in this guns reliability.

Lots of reading...

Thanks for the link WAYNO.

So I gather that your SR9 problems worked themselves out completely with usage? About how many rounds did you need to fire to get to that 100% reliability point? 115gr not a problem anymore?

100% reliable since I took mine home. Over 1500 rounds mainly CCI Aluminum Blazer, but plenty of WWB 115 and even Remington's UMC Bulk. Zero issues to report.

Cleaning it helps, especially if this was it's first range trip. My uncle is an LEO and got one of the new Gen 4 Glocks in 9mm (G26?...baby glock) for his wife. Jammed a few times each mag first time out. Cleaned it and 100% reliable since. Other SR9 owners have experienced the same problem and used the same solution. Sometimes it's a little more than that though.

Just read your other thread, nevermind my advice :).

Could just be a break-in thing. Some shoot great out of the box, some don't, but straighten out over time.

Check out the sticky up at the top of this forum for a full detail strip if you need/want to get that far into the gun.

My SR9 was pretty tight when new... It was more an issue for my wife though. After a few hundred rounds it loosened up nicely. But even today, If I slack my grip it will sometimes fail to reset the trigger.

From what I remember, I think it was just a couple of boxes, and I've had zero malfunctions, since. The 115-grainers function, but they are still the ones with the softest ejection. But, they do now completely clear me, every time, just not as forcefully as the 124 and 147 grainers.

I've already had it apart down to the striker/mag. disconnect for cleaning & lube. I would be happy to go further if I thought I could correct whatever is causing the problem... then again I don't feel I should have to do that on a week and a half old gun.

Mine has shot all types of ammo with no problems.

It will shoot 380 ammo but want eject but we're not going to talk about that.

I'm one of the lucky ones, i have over 7000 rounds thru mine, my first failure was a failure to eject and that was well over 5000 rounds I have had 2 others since that but I think it was due to week handloads. so over 7000 round and only 3 failures to eject (yes I have been keeping a log). I did have some minor peening, I filed off with dremel and didn't have any more problems. :D

Mine was "broke" when I bought it new,and had to be sent back for repair! I have not been able to find enough ammo to break it in!

Same here - broken striker spring cup - still waiting to get it back from the factory. It worked flawlessly through about 70 rounds of various cheap ammo until I tried to clean it and noticed the broken part.
