I've been shooting FMJ's through my new SR9 the past few weeks and am looking for some defense ammo. Any recommendations? Also, are there any that I need to stay away from in the SR9?

Haven't found any that caused problems with mine... I like Remington Golden Saber but want to try the new Hornady Critical Defense round as soon as I can find a supply...

Crazy Coot:

When I got my SR9, I bought some Speer Personal Protection hollow points. They are a 124 gr. gold dot. Speer part number 23618. They came recommended to me by my dealer. They are spendy, but you are not punching holes in paper with them. Just buy some and run a few. I ran 17 through the SR9 and they did fine. Google Ammunition to go, and you will find some great deals on Speer LE ammo.

Every ammo type mentioned in this thread is good. You will want to run some of the ammo through your gun, though.

Read in one thread on best 9mm self-defense ammo that Cor-Bon +P 115-g JHP is recommended best ammo for SD, mainly because of the 1350 FPS muzzle velocity combined with its geing a hollow-point round..impact is close to 470 foot-pounds, I believe. But as others have pointed out, any round that hits in the upper thoracic triangle should do the job...
Same auther said stay away from 147-g ammo for Sd purposes...any opinions on this?

Thank you for the info, I learn something new everyday, Thanks again.

You're very welcome...I'm learning something new every day I log onto this forum...keep in mind the article is basically opinion, but if it's based on Ayoob's experience and recommendations I'll take it seriously.

Crazy Coot,

Remington Golden Saber, 124 gr. gold dot,CORBON 115 JHP hollow point ,... Some good choices listed so far.

I use the Golden Saber in my .40,
CORBON 115 JHP hollow point in my 9mm,
And Gold Dots in my magnum revolvers.

But there are ALOT of other rounds, just as effective.
Those are the proven rounds that hit to my sites the best.

Let others post preferences, do research on the rounds, then buy a box of each that think ya might want.

See which yer gun likes best!

It is always a tad expensive to find THE round for yer gun,but once ya find the right round...worth it!

A few points:

1. Many people disagree with Chuck Hawks. His "authority" status is often questioned.

2. The 147gr 9mm rounds that people denigrate are usually the older designs, some of which had feeding and expansion problems. Newer 147gr loads do not have those problems, or at least not that I've heard of. Many people carry 147s because they generally penetrate better than lighter loads.

3. Carry whatever your gun shoots most accurately and reliably no matter what weight or velocity it may be. Regardless of the caliber or round type, they're all just handguns and all are very limited in their capabilities. There is no magic, one-shot-stop round. Shot placement is always more important than anything else.

I would choose the Corbon DPX over the standard HP anyday. Surprised no one has mentioned that yet. DPX is an amazing performer in gelatin and real world encounters. I use it in every caliber I own, and this is after tons of personal research from various sources. My 2 cents.

I'm a fan of the new Hornady Critical Defense load. I also like Corbon ammo alot. Either would be terrific in the SR9.

Check out Hornady's website for info on their new CD load.

In my 9mm i have found that the Hornady custom 124 gr. works the best. Accurate dependable and fast enough. As stated above i to would like to try out the critical defense rounds but havent been able to find them lately.

Just took my first shots with the Cor-Bon +P 115-g JHP loads...VERY accurate even at 1350 fps muzzle velocity and the extra recoil (which isn't that more than standard FMJ target rounds, IMO)...also didn't seem to be as much muzzle flash as with some of the target loads I've been using...will have to give the DPX a try, but gotta figure either one will do the job in a HD or SD situation...

I agree 100% on the Golden Sabers. They've gone through every gun I've had recently like butter including a balky Hi-Point.

Read an article online recently from a guy addressing exotic defense ammo. It was very informative. Bottom line of his opinion is - if the damn things won't chamber reliably every time, you might as well have a baseball bat...
